Completed my first running 5k

I completed the Atlanta Hunger 5k with my two kids in the stroller this Sunday. I ran the entire time and finished at 40:40. I had to turn back when we lost a shoe and we had to stop briefly at two traffic lights.

Congratulations! Great to take the challenge of pushing a stroller! Way to overcome those shoe gemlins!

How long after completing the C25K program did you run your first 5K race? What did you do to keep in running shape between the C25K finish and your first race?

I'm running in my first on March 30. I am currently in week 6, so for me the wait will be very short.

I graduated on February 8th. (I think? Maybe the 9th.) So it was about a month. I've been running for 30 minutes about four days a week since then. Until yesterday, I hadn't ever hit the 3 mile mark. I relied on the race day motivation to get me through that last half mile.

It's really about *becoming* a runner as a lifestyle rather just hitting a specific graduation date - but don't think about that yet. I would never have gotten through the program without putting my head down and focusing on that one date...and the feeling I got after my graduation run was tremendous. It really is a true milestone to work toward and be proud of when you achieve it. Also, I wasn't able to think of myself as "a runner" until a few weeks after graduation (who, me? Run? Are you serious?). That's a work in progress.

Thanks for the tips. I do think about running becoming a part of my regular exercise routine after completing C25K and doing my first run. My race on the Mar 30 is very near where I live. In fact a banner for it prompted me to start the program in Feb. I've actually done a web search for other races in the area to do each month until the end of summer.

Congratulations again on completing your first 5K!

Awesome! I am just so impressed that you did your first 5K with 2 kids and a stroller! It's a strange thing to start thinking of yourself as a runner, isn't it? I still find myself struggling to call myself a runner even though I'm now running ~10 miles per week on the regular. My first race of the season is this Saturday. Are you registered for any more coming up?

kvossandrews - I'm so inspired by your coming back and starting again.

I have the Big Peach 5k coming up in May but my dirty little secret is that I truly enjoy running. It didn't happen during the C25k program or for a little bit afterwards, but cranking out a half hour in the street or on the treadmill just feels good (not to say I don't get tired...but tired feels different now that I know 100% that I can do it).

Congratulations!! That is truly something to be proud of!! And to run with the kids and the stroller. You are an inspiration to those of us still working our way through the program.

Tomorrow I will be running Week 5, Day 3...and I am still amazed at the awesome feeling I feel after completing the run.

    Thanks for sharing your experience!

Good job! I'm doing my training with two kids in a stroller so I know how much harder that is! I probably won't do any races with them though because I want a better time ;-)

Thanks, you all! What's really funny is that I'm starting to have a hard time believing that I really couldn't run more than one minute three months ago. Just 7 weeks back it was impossible to get my head around the fact that I COULD run for 20 minutes straight.
