Question about lifting

So you all know I'm still knew to lifting. I was just curious. What is the maximum load one can lift with on a dumbbell?
I'm asking because the dumbbells that I have came with 40 lbs, but I can't get more than 4 plates on them at a time. I have some other weights that came with the barbell, but I haven't tried to use them with the short bar.
If I progress beyond the capacity of my dumbbells, what are my other options for tricep extensions?

I'm not sure I fully get the question regarding maximum dumbbell lifting. Sounds like yours are the adjustable kind. I know they sell powerblocks that are basically adjustable and go up to 100lbs each if not higher.
If you're at a standstill for tricep extensions (I'm going to assume you're doing them seated and overhead, using both hands?) I would switch to DB skullcrushers.0 -

I do both.
I'll look into those powerblocks. Thanks.0 -
To clarify - how much maximum weight can you add to a dumbell? You said you can only add 4 plates - how much does a plate weight?0

30 lbs at most based on what it came with. But I could load it with as much as 50 lbs.0 -
I've seen 200lb dumbbells but I don't think I'll be using those any time soon.
If I were in the business of buying new adjustable DBs, I'd get these: http://www.ironmaster.com/Quick-Lock-Dumbbells/
They're nice because they sell kits to keep increasing the capacities all the way to 165lbs. They seem pretty reliable too, and they sell an ez-curl bar, a straight barbell and even a kettlebell that takes the same blocks of weights so you can actually get a pretty good setup that wouldn't take up almost any space.
Of course, for the price you could probably get a decent oly barbell setup (used). Depends on what you're looking for I guess.0
