because of the damn squats!!

since SLs day 1 for me, my concern was that I dont go low enough on squats....one of the trainers in the gym convinced me that I didnt need to go down as low as many try to go....
OK, Fine...

so today , still feeling crappy, I do some bodyweight squats..... well I'll be darned.... I can go all the way down.... Dont know when it occured but dammit I can... So why cant I do it with the bar on my back??? Is it in my head?? Should I pull out my medical card & co-pay and ask a shrink?? Is it that Smith Machine??

Confession: looking at myself thru the mirror go that low is making me wanna do the pole dancing class for real now.... my range of motion is INCREDIBLE.... I can now open my legs wide enough that my knees go to 180 degrees...the things that can be done with that kind of talent??

Haha you should totally do the pole dance class! Many things are possible with that range of motion  :blushing:

I actually can't go down as low with just body weight or with even the empty bar! I find that to get the lowest I can go, I have to have a decent amount of weight on the bar! Weird!

Hahaha. Nice! I don't know if you or your gym has one, but mine has a wooden pole (essentially a broom handle) for practicing form without the added weight. While really similar, back squats with a bar put you in a different position than a body weight squat, so it might be harder to hit parallel.

Um, yes indeed, bedroom aerobics and all that LOL! Shhhhhhhhhhhhh!

About the weighted squats, you are probably afraid of going lower...or maybe the weight is too heavy (I know I know, just trying to think what it might be here) I am not sure how heavy you are squatting, but go back to the beginning and try and go low with just the bar and check your form out from there, work up to a point where you don't go low and....

I am not sure what to do here...

Nex totally triggered something with her comment about being scared....

Did you say you're using a smith machine? That could TOTALLY be why. The range of motion is way more limited using a smith to squat!

I bet if you were to get into a proper power rack and have the safety bars/chains you would rock it out!

I KNOW I am scared of the power rack, especially since I wouldnt have a spotter....

OK, maybe tomorrow I will try it since DH usually goes to the gym with me on Fridays....

I found this too... With bodyweight or the empty bar, I just can't get low enough. So, I had been staying with the bar for the first several exercises. Deciding that I wanted to progress, I threw some weight on it... and, BAM, going below parallel. I was sort of excited when it first happened. The weight actually helped my form.... It was weird.

I squat a lot lower with just body weight also. When I have the bar on my back, I worry more about making it travel vertically through space than how low I go, so as long as it's below parallel with proper form, I don't pay attention to depth really.

    Everyone is different, I guess.

the smith machine probably IS messing you up -- go to the power rack, set the safety pins correctly, put the empty bar on your back, and then squat down until the safety pins catch it and you can just leave it there.

Do that a couple times so you get used to the idea that yes, the power rack is very safe.

Also I can, unweighted, squat all the way down so my calves and thighs are completely touching and my torso is pressed against my thighs, wrap my arms around my legs, and hop around the room in that position. But I could not get that low with 175lbs. Or at least, not if I also wanted to come back up with it. That's pretty normal.

Something tells me you've done this before...

^I want to see this happen.

Also - concur on smith - get the heck off of that thing!!! I do a yoga squat position that helps me with that range of motion, too, so I tend to do that on a regular basis and also as a warm up before my squats.

Haha, the hopping part is really hard and exhausting since its basically all feet/calves doing the work but the position itself is restful. I usually go down into that position - feet further apart is more comfortable though so I just let my arms hang more loosely - between sets at the gym.

My sister used to do this when we were younger, only she'd tuck her knees up into her shirt and then waddle around pretending to be E.T.

Absolutely ditch the smith machine. I tried squats in their several times and I always felt really unnatural and unbalanced. I feel great in the power rack. Set the safety bars so that you can go low enough in your squat, but high enough that they can take the weight if you ended up on your bum.
