Passover / Easter / Family Gatherings...

i'm kinda worried about the upcoming week. Monday night we are celebrating Passover with my in-laws. Usually, I wouldn't stress, although, I am trying to eat primal/paleo, since I have been struggling with gluten/soy/&dairy intolerance. And my MIL doesn't know what 'healthy'/'raw' means. On top of that, next weekend is Easter & I will be spending time with my family. MY ITALIAN FAMILY. Which means - lasagna / italian bread / stuffed shells. Again - stuff I can't eat.

I'm bringing a few dishes with me, although, they are not MAIN dishes. they are SIDE dishes. Hopefully, I can make a meal out of them & there still be enough for other family members to eat. :blushing:

Does anyone else have these kind of stresses? how have your families adjusted to the healthy changes you have made with your diets?

Any suggestions would be a great help!! Thank you in advance and I am really looking forward to your replies

Since you have actual intolerances, I would be very explicit with your family on what they can expect you to eat so they don't ask questions. If you can, maybe suggest some alternatives? I had a baked ziti last night made with brown rice pasta and you literally couldn't taste or feel a difference in the pasta. Totally gluten-free (although not grain-free) but perhaps that could be a happy medium. Take a look around and see if you can make gluten-free bread to share, or offer to bring ham or a roast. Even if you only eat it, at least that will feel like more of a main dish.

I might try to eat before I went to make sure I wasn't too hungry (and therefore overly tempted). Like the pp said, maybe you could offer to bring them ham/chicken/turkey/roast (whatever) so you can choose one without the added junk in it and feel good eating it along with your other dish(es).

I haven't gone to any family gatherings yet (I've only been doing Primal for 3 weeks), but my husband is adjusting well. At first, he asked a lot of questions like why I wasn't eating dinner with the family (answer: because I ate a late lunch since I wasn't hungry earlier, so I wasn't hungry for dinner), and why I wasn't eating the lasagna I had made for the family (this was just last night). If I did go to a family gathering or a party, I'd probaby do what I suggested above. Good luck!!!

I have dealt with these kinds of situations by packing my own stuff (large purse - nuts, jerky, individually wrapped cheese). Maybe you could bring some deviled eggs and sliced ham? - those are both on my menu for this weekend. The Italian meal will be tough - maybe bring a large salad or an antipasto type plate with olives, cheeses, etc.? I've found that as long as I don't bring attention to myself, nobody really notices if I'm pushing stuff around on my plate! Don't go hungry - I've caved into temptation by not planning ahead and getting there hungry! I've also been known to eat the inside of lasagna and avoid the pasta! Good luck!

We are having Passover at my parent's house tonight, but since my sister has food intolerances and I am paleo, we are trying to make the meal as healthy as possible. Mom is making chicken soup, but sis is making grain free matzoh balls. Mom is making brisket and sis is making potato kugel but using rice flour instead of wheat flour(also using only egg whites because she can't eat yolks). Our only veggie side is roasted asparagus. I think it might be our healthiest holiday meal yet, but then there's dessert...sis is making this awesome grain free chocolate cake plus we have macaroons. I'll have to beg God for extra willpower.

I have been worrying about what to about Easter because I am doing a Whole 30 now and I have been SO good. Eating ahead of time is a GREAT idea! Thank you very much!
