anyone played around with ketosis and paleo? i had a back injury the last 6 weeks and am finally on the up... but those last six weeks made me chub up a little and lose muscle (i do crossfit 5-6 days a week, and for me exercise and diet go hand in hand... i need both to do both well)

soooo has anyone tried to do ketosis? I am not sure how much i should try to limit my carbs, how badly my energy will be affected (i've been paleo with carbs between 100-150 since june,) or if this is a good idea to kick start my weight loss again...

any input or experiences would be appreciated :)

Thanks!!

I'm trying it this week. I'm shooting for between 30&50 grams. I don't know how it will turn out. I have to try. I've been having some crazy hormonal issues lately and I think keto will help my body balance itself again. The past week has been awful. It must get better.

Sounds interesting (I just googled it) I will have to read up more about it and definitely plan my meals I hope I don't get "stupid" which is how I felt the first week I was on paleo. I don't know whether that was due to the carb / brain connection or just me and the age/ menopause thing. I'll check back to see if anyone else has any comments on it but I'll try it this week.

just give it a shot. Worst case scenario you have a little lag in energy. That's easy to fix. Add more carbs. Check out the carbohydrate curve on marks daily apple. It will give you a good idea of what level your carbs should be in order to be in ketosis, weight loss, or maintenance. It is not going to be the same for everyone. One thing I though was intetesting when i first found it was that I had always assumed keto was a must for fat burning. His blog eplained it a little better. Some people lose well in keto, but apparently it is not a must for low carb. Interesting. I belive atkins aims for keto. I don't know. I am just trying to fix my mirena crash symptoms after having it removed a few weeks ago. My hormones are just crazy and I have been doing some research and thought keto might help level my issues out a bit.

there are lots of people who do keto/paleo. I'm doing about 80% paleo keto right now. MOST people do more of a primal/keto thing because cheese is a common staple to the ketogenic lifestyle.

If you were doing high/medium carb paleo before, your going to get hit with carb/keto flu still, but give it a few days of eating very high fat, and keeping your net carbs below 20 (carbs minus fiber), and keep your protein in the middle range. there are a couple of keto my fitness pal groups, but i find reddit.com/r/keto to be a great resource to.

I aim for primal/keto - my carbs are set for 38g max (I usually have less than that), I don't bother with net carbs.

Have found this is really the best way for me to easily lose this weight without being hungry all the time. I feel great, the weight is moving steadily downward and I seem to have lost my obsession with what to have for my next meal. Food is merely fuel now.

Try to keep the fat up high and the protein moderate as excess protein will convert to glucose. A lot of people recommend it as a way to kickstart weightloss but maybe try reducing your carbs a little at a time to see at what level you start to go in to ketosis or start to lose energy. I'm finding I have more energy than ever and have lost the foggy head.
Mileage may vary but this is what is working for me right now.

Excellent advice! When I follow this rule of thumb I do great! My problem is adding carbs....triggers binges for me that can last for weeks!

I don't know if this will help but I will share anyhow...

Restarted low carb in January. Daily net carb was 50-70 and 12-1300 cals. I ate a typical LC diet. I worked out about 3-4 times at the gym. Keytone strip averages trace to small and I was always hydrated.

Now day 5 of a primal approach...net carbs are still around 50 if I remember right. Cals are about 1300 w/o counting my daily 2-3T coconut oil. Workout will still be the same...keytone is NOW reading average of large. This just proves, what all the crap I was calling food was messing with my body. Sorry for my subtle burst of excitement :D

My question is...do I really want large ketones. Maybe adding in some extra fruits might be in order...hmmm Because I am really having a cognitive problem right now, can't get the words out. I am thinking in pictures and the word is missing...maybe I am Paleo...sorry bad joke...cave draws and simple language :D

I read recently (and I think it as based on a study, but don't ask me for a citation!) that people who maintained a trace level of ketones lost more than those aiming for high ketones.

I started on Atkins and sort of naturally gravitated to a more primal/paleo approach in that I don't intend on adding grains back, and I only buy grass fed, pastured meat etc. I'm sort of in this in between stage where I'm still willing to eat SF jello the odd time, I consume dairy, but won't by supermarket meat LOL. I am ketogenic, feeling great and just taking it all one day at a time while I learn more. Friend me if you want :)

If you check my diary, you'd see I am in no way keto. :p But I do have a question.

Why kind of ketogenic type diet are you referring to? The Atkins "keep carbs low all the time" version or the bodybuilding "low carbs for the week, minimum fat carb refeed on weekends" method? Tbh, I'd only ever do the latter (if I ever did any kind of keto) because, well, it seems interesting.

Me too....I've learnt though that those extra carbs just make me feel super awful. I had a fairly high carb day last week (still mainly primal food) and it took me 3 days to lose the bloat and lethargy.
When you become aware of how your body responds it makes it so much easier to get back on track. Despite this I was still tempted the next day to keep on eating that way but talked myself out of it. If I hadn't I suspect I would be still on a downward spiral eating really poor carb choices. I've decided that best way to treat this is to realise they are an addiction that has a negative effect on my body so should be approached just like any other addictive substance :-)
