My poor knees!

This isn't a very active area, is it? No matter - I still have questions!

I've been pole dancing for about 15 months now and my knees just don't seem to be getting any tougher. If I don't wear knee pads, even kneeling on the floor will leave me black and blue so I can't do a lot of my favorite off-the-pole moves. Does anyone have any suggestion as to how I can toughen up? I've moved to the thinnest knee pads I could find and I've switched to using a single mat during the warm-up, but I still can't go bare-legged for floor work.

I feel your pain. I'm interested to see everyone's responses. My knees are perpetually bruised. I get less bruised other places (feet, shoulders) but my knees won't quit.

Same here! It seems the rest of me is adapting, but not my knees. The first time I inverted I ended up looking like a battered woman and now it doesn't leave any marks at all. Not so for my knees.

My knees have adapted enough that as long as I do the warm up in knee pads the rest of my pole practice I'm good to go without. I actually just recently got a bruise on my knee after months and months of being without, can't remember what caused it lol.

What I will say is be careful, in the beginning I hurt my knee so bad I had to take a couple months off of pole so it could recover...it sucked big time!! What helps for me is when you get up and down from the ground rely on your muscles, not pushing bone against ground or landing hard on the knee cap. Its more work, but it feels better and gives you a better workout!

I would be very interested in the peoples responses! My floor is carpeted and I'd love a workout to do at home, can either include a pole or not.

Alethea Austin makes a floorwork dvd (along with sexy fundamentals, pure splits, and stretching).

Nice! I didnt know she had a floorwork video. I had the Pure Splits dvd on my list to order, but I think I might check this one out first.

Have you seen this video of her dancing? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmlDlb-UOWE

She moves her body so sexy.

I'm afraid my dance studio has hard wood floors, so no amount of muscle will keep my bony knees from hard contact. Especially since I love cat pounces, rocking cats and kneeling humps/hip circles. I just don't feel quite as sexy in my knee pads. At home I have carpet, but I can't slide, so my moves are limited anyway. (Never do a cat pounce on a carpeted floor if your audience has violated the no touching rule and loosened your corset. Ow. Ow. Ow.)

Aerial Amy (a pole dancer and blogger) has a great video demonstrating different techniques for knee pain during floor work and some tips that might help you.

Basically what you want to try to work on is pushing with your shins and tops of the feet rather than resting all of your weight on the knee cap. So really point your toes, and engage all of the muscles in your legs when you're on the floor. It took me a long time to get used to but if you try and push with the shins it really helps.

I will check that out. Thanks!

She's coming to Houston to do a workshop sometime soon. I may have to go see her in person.

Is off-pole work an important part of training? So far I have only been focusing on the on-pole work.......Seems more fun to me.

What is the weight rating on a pole. Not that I'm fat, I just have some friends that want to party.

lol, you guys are jerks. Quit trolling our group. :grumble:

And weight limits depend on the pole. I believe X poles hold up to 300, if I remember correctly.

not trolling. I was asking a serious question. In the context of pole dancing for exercise is off-pole work an important part? I have only ever considered/seen on pole work.

Its not necessary. If Im sore from a workout the day before then floor work is a good light practice. It can depend on the person and their goals too. Eventually Id like to put together full routines, some sexy, some more trick oriented. Floor work will come in handy for the sexy routines ofcourse.

What exactly is the floor work?

Some studios are more "pole fitness." Mine is more "release your inner trollop." We do a lot of floor work, wall work, standing hip circles, etc.. Floor work is really anything you do between pole tricks. It takes some serious muscle to stay on the pole through an entire song. I did it once - thought I was going to die. After a nice Snake Dive to the floor, I like to roll around, bridge grind, admire my legs, etc.. It's a good way to catch your breath!

lol. Yeah, I like the floor work, its a lot of fun to do when Im in a sexier mood. My pole tricks need ALOT of work... they dont look so sexy right now lol. I like doing floor work as a bit of a cool down too, after Im tired from a nice pole workout.

I love floor work. It's a great warm-up, a great cool down, it adds interest to a routine and makes my boyfriend's eyes pop out of his head. A cat pounce and a hair flip will get me just about anything I want!
