Ketostix aren't accurate. They give false positives of being in ketosis. Every day I see people post in various forums about using them, but can't figure out why things are moving along in one way or another; or why they feel so crappy after eating a certain food.
Peeing isn't what you need to be doing. You should be testing your blood ketone. I know a lot of people don't want to go to their local pharmacies diabetic section and buy a fancy blood meter to test ketones. (if you do, make sure it does ketones, buying just a glucose meter isn't going to help, unless you are diabetic.)
You can read about some testing here: http://www.dietdoctor.com/final-report-two-months-of-strict-lchf-and-ketone-monitoring
Nova has a brand new model out they are giving away for free along with a few boxes of test strips.
You can get a free blood ketone meter here (which will come with some strips): http://www.novacares.com/free_meter.php
Mine took a couple of weeks to arrive.
Strips can be purchased from various online stores:

The cost of the meter is not the problem. The strips are what cause many not to buy the meters. That is one reason I haven't bought one. It's just to expensive to keep up with the strips. I'll stick to my Keto sticks, they haven't failed me yet and I am doing great with my loss.
If you can afford the meter and strips then by all means go ahead but I really don't think it is an absolute necessity.0 -
I requested one. Thanks for posting this!0

It's nice of them to do and great marketing on their part because as has been mentioned, the strips are very expensive and extremely profitable.0

I ordered one and actually already heard from their customer service. Super impressed with the company so far. I hope I find it easy to figure out how to use it once it arrives. Thanks for the recommendation.0

I have a Precision Ultra meter and get the test strips from an online Canadian pharmacy for about $2/strip0

Hi...I'm Kelly and I'm new! How often do you test yourself? :huh:0
-
I did almost very day for the first couple of weeks - mornings only. That's when we figured out that my husband was really sensitive to carbs and high protein, and needed to maintain about 75% fat to maintain ketosis.
These days it's maybe once every week to two weeks, mostly after we've eaten something a little questionable (hmmmm... Wonder if that fried calimari threw us out of ketosis? No? Yippee! Looks like that's a safe item when we go out!)0 -
I just requested mine... they say I will hear from them in 2-3 weeks.0

Thanks for the post! Now if only I could get rid of my ridiculous fear of needles :noway:0

Thank you for posting this! I've just made my request. My Ketostrips were working for me (I think) but a friend came over and tested positive even though she was not on this diet (!), so now I'm suspicious and need a "second opinion".0

So, I just looked it up on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Nova-Max-Plus-Ketone-Strips/dp/B006TIEUS0/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top and it is ~$29 delivered for 10 strips. And the few reviews are not consistent: because they are finding that some of the strips don't work. And when you have only 10, if only 1 fails that's 10% of your strips that are failed and almost $3 wasted.
I can see why this tester is free--they make their money on the strips--but it's not worth it; if the strips are unreliable then I'm not using the meter.0 -

Hmm, quite an informative post. It's always a good idea to check out reviews and such. Thanks for both the info and sources.0
