New to group, working on getting my bypass

Hello everyone! I am new to MFP and this group. I am currently going through the motions of getting approved for gastric bypass. 3 more visits with the nutritionist, getting my thyroid back under control, and the final go ahead from the specialist. I was told my date would probably be late July/early August.

It has taken me a long time to decide to get the surgery. Lots of fears, and lack of proper information were the biggest factors in me dragging my feet. However, with my recent diagnosis of osteoarthritis on top of all the other medical stuff, I can no longer procrastinate. I want to live a long, healthy, pain free life with my family!

I had rny on 9/27/12 and it was the best decision I ever made in a very long time. My highest weight was only 246, but as a type I diabetic with multiple other health issues, including kidneys that were functioning at less than 40%, it was really my last hope. I have lost 85% of my excess weight in the six months since my surgery, and have a little over 20 pounds to go to reach MY goal. My health issues are 99% improved, insulin use thru pump is down from 155+ per day to about 25, cpap machine for sleep apnea was packed up and put away months ago. My cholesterol is normal, my thyroid is functioning normally again, and my kidneys are functioning at 87.8%. I can walk, I can breathe, I can live again. It took 3 denials and a year to get approved by a very impossible insurance company and a huge roller coaster ride to get here, and it was worth every bit of it. Congratulations on this life changing decision. Learn all you can ahead of time, prepare your mind, and follow exactly what you are told to do and you will do fantastic!

I'm so excited for you!!! This will be an amazing tool for you...take advantage if it! Best decision I've ever made. My husband had RNY a month after me and it's been a fantastic journey for the both of us. Best wishes!!!

I had my RNY done on 3-11-13 - Best decision ever! My journey wasn't bad at all. Had the surgery on Monday, out of the hospital on Wednesday, back to work on Sunday. Good luck to you!
  • Wow, that was quick to get back to work. We have a mandatory 2 weeks off, my surgeon will not allow us back before that. Because of this my surgery has to planned around school. I cannot miss a clinical in nursing school or I fail.

My husband is having his about a month after mine, if he reaches all his goals! I am so glad he is doing this with me, it is going to make meal planning so much easier for the two of us! However, I still need to cook for the kids. We joked that once we can eat regular foods again, I can just cook for them and take a bit or two from each of their plates! lol
