Push Up Substitute

I made a topic like this in the workout board, decided to add it here.

What are push up substitutes? Push ups kill my shoulder (causing it to pop on each rep). However bench press does not affect it. But I can not do bench pressing at home (no bench).

Any ideas for substitutes?

What available equipment do you have?

Have you experimented with different hand positions and elbow placements (elbows tucked vs out) for push ups?

I have really bad shoulders, so I switch up my pushups.

Maybe try incline/decline and see if it gives you the same kind of strain?

I have push up bars, helped my wrists. But elbows wide, close, makes no difference. If I cheat off knees it helps but that is it.

I have adjustable ones at home (10-60lbs each). I also have pull up bar. That is the extent of my equipment.

Have you seen a Dr. or physical therapist about your shoulder?
    If not, you probably should.

The physical therapist can give you a number of rehab exercises for your shoulder to safely strengthen the right muscles. You may get a good deal of relief that way.

I've been doing them 5 days a week for a couple of years now and I may finally be getting things in order.

I had some shoulder issues about a year ago and started doing this mobility work twice per week. Pain and popping was gone after a couple weeks and has not returned. Might be something you can try.

You could try floor bench press.

Done here with a BB - but you can do with DBs http://www.muscleandstrength.com/exercises/floor-bench-press.html

TY that looks simple enough. Try that tonight since I am on chest and tri night.

If the pain is really bad, you can do push ups off the wall. Sounds easy & wimpy, but 10 or 20 reps in, and you're feeling it. WHen my shoulders and / or wrists are especially sore, I'll do my push ups off the wall rather than skip the great chest and tricep workout they give.

Good luck & I hope you feel better.

thanks I did some last week and they were incredibly easy it seemed like. Will have to add more weight when doing them.

Never tried pushups on the wall before.
