Yesterday I went on a bike ride for just over an hour and a half. The Map My Ride program showed that I should have burned over 1,000 calories, but the BMF showed that I was only doing vigorous activity for 12 minutes and didn't burn anywhere close to that many calories. I realize that the armband looks at movement of your arm for part of its calculation so I'm wondering if I really did burn more calories than it shows. Does anyone have any information on this. Thought about it after I returned - maybe I should have worn it on my calf instead of my arm.
Yesterday it shows that I burned 2307 calories and the prior day 2047 calories and on that day I was sedentary all day (in a class).

I find that it's pretty accurate for Spin, but I think I'm in the minority. That said, I worked HARD yesterday for a little over an hour and only burned 378. I am small, tho, so I don't burn a lot of calories doing anything--that included 51 minutes of vigorous for me.0

I went for a bike ride yesterday and wore my fit on my calf. The numbers I got seemed very reasonable for the ride. I would recommend switching to your calf for rides.0

I do a spinning program most days and found that if I wear it on my calf during those times, it's more accurate. Before BMF I wore a HRM so that's how I compared whether it was more accurate on my arm or my calf for spinning. Hope this helps.0

Thanks for all of the advice. I will try next time to wear it on my calf AND wear my HRM and compare the two. Guess it isn't a bad thing if it showed too few calories, because I wasn't tempted to "eat" them0

Have you asked BMF?0

I have ki-fit (UK equivalent of media fit) and asked this question of them when i first got it two years ago. They told me to keep it on my arm when cycling but to have it lower towards my elbow and turned in the way rather than the back of the arm. They also sent me a diagram which I have since lost. Maybe just email bodymedia and ask for their suggestions.0

Any time I ride my bike, I always move my BMF to my left calf. My burn always seemed so low when it was on my arm so I tested it out. On one bike ride, I wore my HRM and then the next day, wore my BMF on my calf. The numbers were pretty close when the BMF was on my calf so that's what I've been doing from that point forward.0

Body Media has suggested not wearing the device while riding and adding the information manually. It does not pick up correctly while worn on the arm bicycling.0
