Hi Ladies

I have PCOS and find it rather depressing that everyone else can lose weight so much faster than me.

I find success stories really motivating and was wondering if any of you have had success losing weight with PCOS(Pics please) and if so, any tips? and what exercise program do you follow?

Hey, I saw your post, it can be frustrating when you see others having great success loosing 2-4 lbs a week and you are struggling but the thing to remember about those who loose that amount of weight a week have a lot of weight to loose. I am one who is loosing on average 2 lbs a week but I had to loose 100 lbs I started off at 265 lbs. I'm not quite sure what 29 kilograms converts to in Pounds but from your picture you don't look like you have too much to loose but I also know that pictures can be deceiving.

But to answer your question, I get up at 4 am Monday, Wednesday and Fridays and I go the gym and workout for 65 minutes, then I do another 20 minutes of cardio during lunch along with about 15-20 minutes of strength training, after work I take my dog for about a 50 minute walk. ON Tuesday's and Thursday's I do a Couch to 5K program for 45 minutes during lunch and walk my dog again for about 50 minutes. On Saturday's I also do the Couch to 5K program for 45 minutes and sometimes may do about 20 minutes of other cardio depending on the day. I try to get the dog out for a walk on Saturday as well. ON Sunday I just take the Dog out for a walk but try to go for about 90 minutes. I try to eat as clean as I can cooking and eating left over's as often as possible.

So even though the weight is coming off fast for me I do work out very hard to get that weight off.

WOW! that really does sound very hectic. Wherever do you find the time for that? Im recovering from a knee injury so im not allowed any exercise currently. I am going to start on an elliptical trainer tonight to see if i can do 10 minutes without any pain in the knee so it is rather frustrating :(

Pic is deceiving, but you know how it is, we tend to shy away from the camera :)

That is no fun that you have a Knee injury while you are trying to loose weight. I am very sorry about that, it's got to add some frustration to your weightloss attempt. Well I get up supper early in the morning on Monday, Wendesday and Friday and I eat my lunch at my desk while I work and my husband gets home at 6:3 and I get home at 5:30, we have not been successfull at having kids yet so I don't have them to take care of yet so I walk the Dog when I get home and still get home around the same time as my husband and get to spend time with him. We want a baby very badly and I know doing all of this activity will help us have a baby.

I haven't taken any pics, but I have lost 19 pounds so far since the middle of January.

It doesn't come off fast, but slow and steady wins the race! I figure that I have to make changes that I can sustain for a lifetime, not just temporarily.

I started out just eating whatever I wanted (within reason - I already ate pretty healthy, no junk food, no fast food, no pop and all that) and following MFP calorie guidelines. Recently my natropathic doctor has me eating gluten free, no dairy (this is because I'm slightly lactose intolerant so probably doesn't apply to everyone) and most importantly NO sugar (no added/refined sugar that is, fruit is ok but she has me sticking to low sugar fruits like berries, no bananas!) It's pretty difficult to stick to but I get as close as I can. And I lost 3 pounds last week so... I guess it's helping?!

She also told me to make sure I get at least 20 grams of protein for breakfast, and I have to admit, I stay full a LOT longer than I used to! I try to get around 100 grams of protein a day, and that keeps my carbs much much lower.

I got to zumba 1/2 times per week, and yoga 2/3 times per week, and I run 2/3 times per week. I also walk for about an hour every day with my dog.

I've lost 30lbs with PCOS. It's been about 5 months so it isn't fast but a lot faster than I expected from hearing all the horror stories! Also after losing 16 pounds my periods came back and I've had 3 regular cycles without medication! It can be done.
I'll see if I can post a few pictures tonight for comparision. Good Luck!

You women are amazing! Makes me hopefully, congrats to you all. Do any of you suffer from facial hair? If so, has it gotten better with the weightless?

Oh yes I suffer from Facial hair, and mine has gotten a little bit better (I no longer have to remove it both in the morning AND at night, only have to once a day now.) Hoping for more improvement on that as te weight keeps coming off.

Someone on this forum said that with PCOS, "you have to work twice as hard to make half the progress". That is looking to be true for me. I dropped 10 pounds in the first two weeks (much of it was probably water weight, but I'm counting it anyway.) Since then, I've been meticulous about food, and I've been exercising a lot (walking and swimming) but a pound per week seems to be the best I can manage, and even then only if I work my tail off.

A few things I've learned though:
Keep processed carbs to a minimum.
Avoid milk, or at least cut down on it.
    Eat lots of vegetables.
Consider seeing a doctor to get a metformin prescription, or take a good supplement alternative.
You are probably vitamin D deficient. MANY women are, and MOST women with PCOS are.
You actually do have to exercise, you can't just do diet alone. As you knee recovers, consider options like swimming or recumbent stationary bike or something that helps to get the work in without putting too much strain on your knees.

Also, take the long view. I have a hundred pounds to lose. (Even then, I'll still technically be obese). I've accepted that it will probably take me two years. And once I reconfigured my thinking to accept this reality, I'm finding my motivation in different ways. Like: I'm already 10% of the way to my goal. And, by this time next year, I will be fifty whole pounds lighter than I am right now. If I want to make that a reality, I need to keep working hard for that one pound a week.

Best of luck with your knee recover and with your pcos and with weight loss!

@gr8xpectation : Thanks, tried metformin, just makes me very sick! :( Thinking of trying a cinnamon supplement instead.

@WifeofPJ : The facial hair is the most annoying part for me! It really kills my confidence, my skin is dark around my chin...i cant go out in the sun as i dont want people to see it, it really restricts me. im hoping to lose some weight and try Laser again when my hormones are a bit more stable.

Just finding it hard to stay on track at the moment!

I managed to lose 40lbs during 2012. I didn't even know I had PCOS at the time but just thought for some reason I had to work especially hard to lose that compared to everyone else lol. I only found out yesteday that I have PCOS!! Although I struggle with my weight, am super tired all the time and suffer from acne it just didn't cross my mind as I have my two boys. But I only have one polycystic ovary so maybe that is why I had no problems getting pregnant??

Over a holiday abroad and Christmas I put a little back on over Xmas and haven't been successful at losing any great amount of weight so far since January. I'm just starting back eating low carb tomorrow so will see how that goes.

Good luck, it's hard work but can be done!

I have PCOS. It has developed into Type 2 diabetes. I have lost almost 100 pounds since the beginning of May 2012. I eat a very low carb (ketogenic) diet. It's the only way I lose weight and control my blood sugar. I was recently put on Metformin for the PCOS. I was also prescribed spironolactone (Aldactone) which reduces hair loss, acne, and abnormal hair growth on the face and body. I have a lot of facial hair. I've just stopped taking the spironolactone to see if it is causing me dizziness. I have found that supplementing with saw palmetto helps to reduce facial hair.
  • I was diagnosed with PCOS a few months into my uni course last year, it explained a lot!
I originally gave up on trying to lose weight and tried to embrace how I was, that didn't work though so I set about trying to lose weight, so far I've lost 14lb since around February/March time, it's been hard, and mega fustrating though, I work out with some of my friends who drop the weight faster than I could ever dream to despite putting in less time and effort than I do!

On the upside the slow and steadiness of the weight loss will mean that you are less likely to knock your metabolism out of whack and -hopefully- will be more likely to keep the weight off!

Keep going, it's hard but doable! :)

Thanks for the replies ladies. Slowly but surely, we WILL do it.

Great to know that some of you have already lost some weight even with PCOS
  • I do not really lose tons of weight, so I tend to judge by the changes I see in my body shape.

wow! great results, mind sharing some tips!
  • Tips -
    Exercise and eat well.
If you can't exercise, focus on eating well.
If you can't eat well, make sure you exercise.
Don't allow going off track to become the new normal. Regroup, make changes where needed, keep trying.
Take a break and reasses when you lose enthusiasm for a diet or exercise routine.
Take tons of pics! Hiding from the camera will not help you.
Give yourself time to see results. I mean like a year, because life isn't TBL.
Tell everyone to back off...this journey is going to be all over the place, but you're ready.

No tips about what to eat or how to exercise. Just make changes that work for you and be more on than off (I have an 80% on rule)
  • I have PCOS and insulin resistance, I take metformin for that. It has taken me a year to lose 50 lbs, and I started out slowly, just making little changes at a time so I wouldn't be overwhelmed. I work with a personal trainer for weight training twice a week, I use MFP to count calories, and I try to do an hour of cardio every day. Usually my cardio work is a walk with the dog. I have found that a lower carb diet helps me, but can be tough to stick to for me. Bread and carbs are my weakness, but I feel better when I am not eating them. Yes, it's slower going for us, and I try not to compare myself to others for this reason. Slow and steady, don't beat yourself up, just keep doing the work! :)

PCOS sucks! I have done pretty much every diet out there, even as far as doing the hcg diet. Nothing worked and pounds. kept returning. I basically changed up my diet to include HIGH protein, we're talking 150 grams a day, and 6 meals throughout the day. I cut sugar out of my diet completely and try to eat bread-type carbs before the early afternoon if I eat carbs at all. 1200-1300 calories a day is my max. I allow myself 1 cheat meal a week. I did find out that this diet alone helps with my sugar crashes and have realized that my body just does not process carbs. well. :( And we ALL love our carbs!!! I was lifting heavy weights and doing about 30 minutes of cardio a day. Lately I have been super busy with a house remodel/flip project and have not been AS strict, but still burning calories and still losing. I am 5'3, right now at 176. Good luck!

I have lost 72 pounds so far and been working on it since May 2011. Also have PCOS. It is possible to lose the weight, just a bit frustrating at times.

    Greetings!

Losing weight with PCOS is hard, but challenges exist so we can defeat them and prove our strength to ourselves. Right?? RIGHT!

It's taken me just under a year to lose 40 lbs. This is what worked for me:

Eliminate most if not all processed foods (chips, candy, baked goods bought at stores or off the shelf)
Eliminate soda (not a big one for me, I never drank it)
Reduce carbohydrate intake to ~ 100g / day. Get those carbs from fruit, whole grains, and vegetables
Try to reduce the amount of "white" strarches: rice, breads, pasta, etc.

The diet was hard at first. I struggle with eating when I am bored or stressed. I found keeping healthy snacks (fruits and veggies) around helped with that. Also, increase water intake! Slices of lemons and lime help keep water "exciting".

If you find yourself really craving to eat something or you are at a bday party or something, have a small serving and then tell someone "I am trying to watch what I eat and I just ate a piece of ____, can you help me be accountable so I don't eat any more". This takes confidence, but I never once got negative feedback and it worked!

Once you get the eating thing down, then move on to exercise. (took me almost a month to get the eating down and to stop the sugar cravings...which were intense!)

For exercise, if you are carrying a lot of extra weight like me...I found movements that are easy on the joints to be best. That way, you don't hurt yourself and you don't experience muscle fatigue/soreness for days after the work out. Some suggestions are:

    walking on treadmill
    swimming
    stationary bike
    jogging on treadmill
    rowing machine

I try to do these cardio exercises 3-4x/wk

I also like to get some strength training in. In my opinion, your body is the best tool for weight training. Look up: lunges, squats, and push ups (on knees). I try to do strength training 2-3x/wk

I like to take one day for just stretching and easy gentle yoga moves.
I like to take 1 day a week as a rest day.

Following this plan I lost 40 lbs in a year. I know it doesn't sound like a lot, but my periods returned to normal and I feel a lot better about my self and body...plus lots of people have started to notice! :)

GOOD LUCK! (add me as friend if you'd like)

    Sara
