Flipping out - suggestions for not spiraling down?

I find that I too easily get thrown by things.

1. Getting on a scale which I did for the first time in a long time - a week ago.

2. I am looking at starting weight training and it was suggested that I take my measurements. I did and that has thrown me for a loop. When I measured my waist (without sucking it in) it was 38". Since that number is what I think hips "should" be, instead of motivating me, it made me want to give up.

Any suggestions?

Small goals might help. Go for one day binge free and drink lots of water. Re measure after a couple good days of no binging. I find that my belly bloat goes down so fast once I commit to eating normal. I have not binged for three days in a row after a long streak of binge days and I can already tell my bloat has decreased a TON. You can do this! You will feel awesome after even one day of healthy foods in healthy amounts!

    Thanks DM,

I've gone a week with no binging and very healthy eating. So if this is better, I hate to think of how it was (I'd been literally not looking at myself).

Getting outside to exercise did help - I ran and walked for an hour - so I'm feeling less discouraged. (and am sitting at the computer sucking it in like crazy)

    Congratulations on your progress!

Good exercise for waist is to get a fairly heavy dumbbell, hold in one hand and lean over to the side with it, back up, and repeat for 50 times each side. I do that 3 times a week. It also works your abdominal muscles at the same time. I use a 10kg weight. But the best thing, ideally, is to avoid too many refined carbs, eat a lot of vegetables, drink plenty of water and just allow a treat if and when you fancy it, but in moderation. For example, if you are out and fancy something, have it, as it is better than an all out binge in the end. It is essential that even if you do binge, you try and still workout as that does make a difference.

I understand what you mean about something setting you off. I lost 1.25 lbs this week when I thought I should've lost 2-3 lbs and I bought into the "what the heck" mentality and binged for three days. Now, as usual, I'm regretting it as I'm back on track and having to lose all the weight I gained. Keep the faith!

    Thanks Graelwyn,

I particularly appreciate the exercise suggestion.

That's what i know less about. Will give it a shot. Monday - 50 on each side - I only have 5 lb weights so will try two in a hand and see how many I can do.

Did you start with 50 or work up to that?
