Hellman's Real Mayonnaise

So, I'm extremely new to the Primal/Paleo lifestyle.
I'm reading The Primal Blueprint and visiting Mark's Daily Apple daily (ha!) to learn as much as I can.
I'm still getting rid of a lot of food in my house that I will pretty much never eat again, and I was seriously amazed at one thing I noticed. For years....years! I had been buying either Miracle Whip or "lite" or low-fat" mayo, and tried many brands.
For some reason, and maybe it was family, friends, don't really know, I always had this aversion to Hellmann's. Just grossed me out.

I'm sure I had it before, but today, since I realized that what was in my fridge was crap, I went out and bought me a nice-sized jar of Hellmann's Real Mayonnaise. I added 2 tablespoons to my tuna, mixed it up and had a taste. I put the tuna mixture over my salad and added no other dressing. It was the best tuna salad ever.

(No, I don't work for Hellman's.)
Please do not tell me I shouldn't be eating this stuff.....

Ok, I won't. :) but if you want heaven, try making your own with an excellent olive oil.

I just can't bring myself to make my own mayo, so I buy it. But I have a problem with nightshades, so I use Heinz. It has been good so far.

    Here are the ingredients:

SOYBEAN OIL, WATER, WHOLE EGGS AND EGG YOLKS, VINEGAR, SALT, SUGAR, LEMON JUICE, CALCIUM DISODIUM EDTA (USED TO PROTECT QUALITY), NATURAL FLAVORS. GLUTEN-FREE.

Is it paleo? no Soybean oil is not paleo. But only YOU decide how paleo you want to be. If it makes you happy, so be it.

PS Homemade mayo is supereasy and very tasty. Downside, only keeps for a week.

    Here is my recipe:
    One egg at room temp
1/4 regular olive oil (no evoo)
    1/4 tsp garlic powder
    1/4 tsp onion powder
    1/2 tsp dry mustard
    1/2 tsp salt
Mix in blender or food processor.
Then slowly drizzle 1 cup of olive oil (again no EVOO) into mixture (over about 2 to 3 minutes). I have not tired it have been told if you food processor push down lever has a small hole in it, you can put the oil in that and let it go on it's own.
  • Thanks.
I will definitely consider making my own, since I've also been reading that Calcium Disodium EDTA is not so good for you.
Obviously one of the reasons I've chosen to do this - sick of googling ingredients!

I'm far too lazy to make my own mayonnaise. I mitigate the damage as much as possible by using the Hellmans Olive Oil variety. It still uses soybean oil but obviously less than the regular as some is replace by the olive oil. It tastes just the same to me as the regular stuff.

I also prescribe to the "define your own paleo" - soy happens to be very high on my personal "no way" list. I wish there was a good mayo made without soy or even at least non gmo soy, so if anyone knows of any please share.

I "make my own" version of keto primal but soy is a deal breaker for me. So, condiments are now mostly homemade.

Homemade is EASY and there's so many ways to modify it. I've eaten Hellman's in a bottle all my life and I'm wondering why. (My grandma remembers making mayo, but my mother never did. I find that disturbing.) Since I don't eat processed foods, especially if they contain canola, soy, or other unhealthy additives, I must make my own condiments. It's not hard and I love them. Baconnaise is my current fave and mayo made with olive oil and macadamia oil (yummy for fish). Oh, and garlic mayo!

And I'm lazy. Seriously, mayo (and salad dressings too) is so easy and so worth it.

Edit: my mayo keeps for at least two weeks and longer... not that it usually lasts that long. I don't get freaked out about dates; if it's still edible I eat it, but I guess that comes from living in the Arctic. Waste not, want not. And flying in healthy ingredients is killer expensive.

Yup, just made some last night :) I use thise EASY recipe that's delicious

    1 room temp egg WHOLE
    300ml light olive oil
    2TBSP lemon juice
1tsp dijon mustard or mustard powder (i put more if I"m using "wet" mustard)
    1tsp salt

Blend for 30 seconds with a stick blender

It's SO EASY you would not believe! I blend it in a small mason jar so I don't have to transfer. Warning: You will eat about 100 calories worth cleaning the blades :p ENJOY!

I forgot the thing that turns the egg into mayo, the acid source. Add 1 T of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice with the 1/4 cup of olive oil.

How do you know when mayo goes bad? I always throw it out after a week (figuring a raw egg). If it last longer that is a huge win.

I don't know cause it's never "gone bad" on me but I can say I've used mayo made at home for 2 weeks NO ISSUE. I give it a whiff if i'm a few days over, still cool.

I always date my homemade mayo with the date on my eggs. When I can get local eggs that aren't packaged/stamped (we call them "black market eggs") I figure it's good for about about a month. We've never been sick from mayo going bad!

My MIL (who keeps chickens) marks the eggs with a 1-31 on them in marker. That way we know which to eat first :)

I usually make my own but log it under helmans for ease however I've recently started making Hollandaise instead it seems to keep a little longer and is less likely to split ( it's primal rather than paleo as uses butter but Kerrygold is a lot cheaper than olive oil).

    HI,
Here is a great recipe to make your own mayo
    http://www.primalgrounds.net/paleoprimal-mayonnaise-recipe-macadamia/
It uses Lacto-fermetation method,so will last several months.
You can also use your choice of oil instead of macadamia.

I'm new to Paleo as well, and just made my first batch of homemade mayo using 1/2 olive oil (regular, not virgin or extra virgin) and 1/2 walnut oil. OMG, it was so easy and AMAZING. I used the homemade mayo, coconut milk, and some spices to make homemade dill ranch dressing and it was divine!

Try hollandaise as a start, heat egg yolk and white wine vinegar over a ban Marie whisking till it goes pale, whisk in melted butter slowly, you can leave it to go cold before you eat it- tastes fairly like mayo but is cooked.

    Hey Mike, howzitgoin'?

There's one mayo that doesn't use any soy - and has a pleasing flavor to boot: Hain Safflower Mayonnaise. While real purists may quibble over safflower oil as well, I don't use enough mayo to make it myself. You can find it at any healthfood store, or at Whole Paycheck or the health food aisle of your local market (if they have one).

    Ingredients (14):
Safflower Oil Expeller Pressed, Egg(s) Whole, Grain(s) Vinegar, Water Filtered, Egg(s) Yolks, Salt, Egg(s) Whites, Cane Juice Dehydrated, Spice(s), Lemon(s) Juice Concentrate, Honey, Tocopherols Mixed (Vitamin E), Flavor(s) Natural, Paprika Extract Added for Color

Google hellmans knockoff recipe and replace the soy oil with LIGhT olive oil (not light in fat, but in flavor). Amazing and paleo!
