Second 5K

I did my first one two monts ago and have kept training. I dropped 51 seconds off my mile time, and am at 43% for my age group. When I look at the time, it seems slow, but I guess I beat 57% of the other ladies my age. My mile time today was 11:39.

I didn't feel much like going. I've had a sinus infection that went into my chest for the last 1.5 weeks. I'm on antibiotics and steroids for that. I'm having digestive issues today. I had to walk at times so I could get a good cough in and clear my chest. Whine, whine, whine. I thought the course was easier this time, but I stopped into the running store afterwards, and he said it was actually harder. Anyway, I'm glad I went now, and my time will certainly get better on my next race. There were two other ladies similar age and body condition to me. We ended up taking turns walking, then passing each other for the whole race. That was fun.

Note to everybody else: Kathleen is made of iron, but the rule to thumb is that you don't run if your cold is below your neck or if you have a fever.

Great job, Kathleen! Great time - you're getting so much stronger and faster!

Thanks, Varda. I don't know that I'm made of iron, though.

I've heard that rule of thumb, but this is the first time I've had to deal with it. The two sports affected are swimming and running. All other activities like biking and lifting, I can get through (though less intensely). It's really about the gunk stuck in your lungs...you just can't get enough air through. That caused my heart rate to run higher during the race, and it took me longer for it to come down afterwards.

For my sinuses infection, I couldn't even put my head under the water last week because the head pressure was insane. Today I could finally get some real swimming in, though mostly I focused on kicking. My legs are doing better because of all the kick workouts I've been doing. I hope that helps my running, too.
