Is there an explanation for this?

This has happened three times in the last four months, this morning included. I'll out of no where have a complete beast of a session at the gym. I'll be lifting the same 8 rep max weight as two days previous, but literally feel like I'm throwing the weight around. I'll be putting real slack on the cables (still on that darn machine) at the end of every lift, or find myself unintentionally slamming the top of the stack. Once I see this happening, I of course increase my weights.
Two days later, in my next workout, a couple of the higher weights may 'stick', but most will go back to my previous max.
I'm a little baffled by this. The only difference to my regular routine this morning was that I had a 75 yard sprint about 20 minutes before my workout. Is there any way that this could be stimulating a more explosive workout?
Any ideas at all? And can it be recreated for every workout, because it kind of rocks

What do you normally do pre-workout?
A bit of adrenaline and a good warmup can do amazing things.0 -
My usual warmup is a steady 5 minute walk to the gym at about 3mph, and then a 5 minute walk on the treadmill at about 4mph and some dynamic stretching.0

My next move would be to do a sprint or two on the treadmill before my next session and see how it felt.0

Probably warmed up, flexible with adrenaline pumping.

If I understand what you're describing correctly, not really. Good days happen and bad days happen. You can't have good days every day, and you won't have bad days every day (unless something is wrong). (PS do you do warmup sets as well? If not, you should.)0

Not that I've noticed - my eating in particular is pretty consistent, and I generally sleep pretty well. Feel free to glance over my diary. First time it happened I just chalked it up to 'good day at the gym'. Now I've seen it happen three times, I'm starting to pay more attention.
Perhaps it is just a simple case of having a good day, and I'm reading entirely too much into it :laugh:

My stamina was also better on the day, I worked out both harder and for longer.
Last night, though, the DOMS set in. And holy cow, I have never had DOMS like it. My legs in particular are in agony, tender to the touch and quads scream at me at the mere hint of tension.
So previous posters' suggestions of a spike of adrenaline allowing me to push myself beyond my normal limits (and then later pay the price), would seem to make sense? I guess I did have a pretty rushed and stressful morning leading up to my workout.0 -
It really does sound like you had a 'good' day - you should try to replicate it and see how you go. You may have found the 'winning formula' for you (maybe not the stress part though!).0
