How to slow down?

I think it's not helping that I live in Northern California where, as my dear husband puts it, "every sport must be done to an extreme every time." So when I go run, EVERYONE is fast. Even the walkers walk faster than I do. So I'm pushing my running pace too fast, I think, and the past two runs my right calf and ankle have been killing me. My app tells me I'm doing about 9:30 min mile while I'm running. That seems fast to me, so I've downloaded another app to check pace. But, at any rate, I still think it's way too fast. Any suggestions on how to slow it down - if I get much slower then I feel like by breath gets out of whack to my pace.

Sing the ABCs while you run. Sound silly, but if you can't talk comfortably and run at the same time, you probably are going too fast. It also helps pace your breathing- inhale with ABC, exhale with DEFG, and so on.0

Love the ABC idea!
This is a great question because it's the major challenge of C25k. ANYBODY can run fast. For a few seconds. It's learning to run slowly enough to cover distances that's the challenge. Think "Turtle running through peanut butter." Or, even better, run as slow as you walk.
The breathing issue is usually one of form. What I have learned is to pull up through your core, keep your head up and look out in front of you, and move your hips forward until they feel like they are balanced over your toes. That way you aren't slouched over and cutting off your air. Take small, quick steps that land underneath you. This will help your form in many ways into the future too.
I just read the book "Running on Air" that suggest that you inhale for three steps and then exhale for two, but I'm not sure you need to worry about that right now. Just breathe normally.0 -
