Is anyone out there sticking to a strict low carb diet that have also been able to get off of some of their meds? I'm currently taking: Lantus, 16 units daily, Humalog (when needed), Actos, Victoza, and Synthroid (generic). My dream is to be completely off my diabetes meds in the future. is this a pipe dream?

Right now I feel like I'm doing okay. I've dropped 16 lbs. since the middle of April (6 weeks) by drinking a LOT of water and eating as close the 30 carbs max per day. Recommendations are appreciated. I'm trying to stick to a 1200 calorie diet and haven't really found this to be a problem with low carbing. Getting off diabetes meds is a really big goal for me and I just want to know if it's doable.

Yes, it's doable and I did it in 12 months. I used a number of supplements, eliminated all carbs other than fresh fruit and veggies, increased protein, and added good fats to my diet. Then I gave up TV, went all out with exercise and dropped 60 pounds. It's challenging but rewarding in many unexpected ways. Questions? Just ask me. Good luck achieving your goal!

I wasn't taking as much meds as you....just Amaryl and Metformin. I no longer take the Amaryl but still take the Metformin because it helps with weight loss. I keep my carb intake below 100g a day and my sugar under 25g a day. Seems to be working for me. If you can do less carbs, that's even better!

Losing weight and reducing diabetes meds go hand in hand. Others have done it......you can too! :)

I started MFP white I was diagnosed with type 2 in August. Was put on 2000mg of Metformin. By December, I had lost about 10% of my body weight and my HbA1c was good enough for my GP to advise me to start experimenting with cutting back on the medication. I'm now down to 500mg of the Metformin, which i believe is the smallest dose and my BG is around 5.2-5.5. Hoping that if I lose a little more weight I will be able to get off it altogether.
