sinus issues/hypoglycemia from meds?

I was wondering if anyone has had sinus headaches or hypoglycemia issues from Asacol or similar type meds (Apriso/Asacol/other mesalamine brands)?

I woke up this morning with low blood sugar where I felt dizzy, nauseous, and clammy. It went away over a few hours after I ate a banana and a sandwich. This seems to be happening to me more and more often in the past 6 months. While trying to find out causes of hypoglycemia in non-diabetics, I came across something that said sulfa and salicylic anti-inflammatory medications can cause it. I then looked at the side effects of my meds and noticed sinusitis is one of them. It suddenly clicked that I've struggled with sinus headaches for years now and never made the connection.

Anyone else notice a similar connection either with their sinuses or their blood sugar?

I recently had a colonoscopy that showed zero signs of disease (I have had UC for 8 years but have been in remission for most of it). The doctors want me to have another one in 6 months and if that one is good, I'm considering requesting that they take me off my meds.

I never noticed any symptoms from sulfasalamine, but I suck at remembering to take pills, so most of the time I am medication free. I had a long hard flare end of last year, beginning of this year, but I'm in remission now - all without medication.

Your question can probably be better answered on this site: http://www.ccfa.org/
I was reading earlier about various connections on other illnesses or autoimmune diseases associated with UC. Your doctor should be able to provide an answer too.
  • I have only just spotted this query.

I find the same thing - I am on a high maintenance dose of Asacol and I often get hypoglycaemic symptoms and I have suffered with my sinuses since I was a child, which worsened when I was diagnosed UC and went on the 5ASA based meds. So you're not alone - the side effects and weird additional symptoms are varied and numerous unfortunately!
