Embarrassing...

I feel so bad for the teen boys at the gym tonight. I lift more weight than they do... and I'm a 54 year old woman.

Oh, dear.

Well done, you! I'm just a few years younger than you and there's no way I could lift more than my teenage son! (Despite having put in more work than he has, which is frustrating!). It's inspiring to see women around my age getting really strong!

The boys shouldn't be embarrassed, though. We've all got to start somewhere. My son and I actually started with the same weights, and he wasn't embarrassed about lifting around the same as his short, obese mother at the gym.

That's awesome. I wish I could get my son to the gym! He needs it!

I train with my husband, and the deal used to be he had to lift twice my weights. But now I'm catching up and he can't get that far ahead again. ;^) Some exercises he's only at 10 or 20 pounds or so more than I am.

I usually try to make my comparisons as percentage of body weight... for instance if I am 120# and bench press only 60# and someone else is 180 and benches 90, well, we are both benching 50% of our body weight although it seems like the other person is benching so much more. Of course, body composition also needs to be taken into consideration when making the comparison.

Good for you. I lift heavier than many guys in my gym too. Yesterday one told me I was working out way too much.

Oh well! That will make them work harder. Be an inspiration to the young folks and keep on keepin' on!

I haven't gone to that side of the gym yet, I don't know how to use free weights. I stick to the strength training machines. I want so bad to learn how to use the free weights, to get a good routine down, etc. I know once I do I will be addicted. Maybe some day.
