Anyone start when they were close to 300 pounds?

I just started C25K last night. Week 1 Day 1 is complete. :) I was really, really surprised and pleased with myself. I was able to run all of the running portions and used the walk portions to recover. I found the timing was perfect. By the time it said "run", I was ready to run, and just when I felt like I was going to die, it would say, "walk".

Today is my rest day, and I'm excited to do Day 2 tomorrow.

I was wondering if anyone else started C25K when they were close to 300 pounds? I got fit for shoes, and I love them, but I noticed my left foot hurt afterward. I could hardly stand to walk. It was fine once I got home and stretched, though, so I think it's a weight issue, not a shoe issue. Maybe my feet aren't used to the impact?

Also, I LOVED running! I wasn't very fast, but I was running, and it felt amazing, like my feet and legs wanted to run. But boy... I could really feel those 296 pounds when I ran. When I walk, swim, dance, do Turbo Jam, etc, I don't really feel the weight. I'm used to it. I can walk pretty fast now. But when running... maybe it's because I'm sort of lifting myself off the ground? Did anyone else experience that? The best analogy I can think of is that heavy feeling when you get out of a pool after a couple hours. Every time I pull myself up the ladder, I feel like I weigh 800 pounds because I got used to being practically weightless in the water. I hope that makes sense. :) Anyway, that's what running felt like.

I'm not going to stop. I really hope this helps me lose more weight, and I'd love to be able to run a 5K someday. I know others have run a 5K at this weight, so I'm going to keep at it and (hopefully) get used to it. I didn't measure my distance last night, so I have no idea what my pace is, but I'm going for endurance right now, not speed.

I have the same problems. I've learned that a) I tie my shoes way too tight - your feet expand slightly when you run. My feet were falling asleep. b) I push myself too hard and end up with shin splints, feet pain, etc. and c) Keeping at it and stretching will help alleviate some of those aches and pains.

I know people that are over 300 lbs and have run marathons. It can be done but your body just has to get used to it. Keep going, you're doing great!

That's a really good point about the shoelaces and feet swelling. I noticed my left foot felt a bit numb when I got home, so I'll remember to lace them a bit looser the next time I head out. Thanks!

It's funny. So much of the time people assume that a block they have with running is mental - when it's a well researched physiological artifact. And a lot of time, people attribute problems to their weight that are just common problems.

Your shoe is too small, too tight, or you're lacing it wrong. I have the same issue.

    I'm so happy for you!

When I started running, my whole body sloshed from side to side. Boobs, belly, thighs, butt. It's a completely different motion that uses different muscles.

This is exactly right. I'll probably end up telling you to slow down at some point or another anyway. :)
Just remember, if you ever feel like it's too much, that's your body telling you to slow down some more.

First of all, well done! Isn't it great when you find something you love, it's half the battle. Don't worry about distance at this point, concentrate on following the program and the rest will come with time. I have found running great at helping me lose weight now that I'm running regularly, and it's something you can do anywhere, I was away for a girlie weekend with 7 of my friends and still managed to fit in a run.

I would love to add you as a friend. I am 275 and just getting ready to start C5k with my 8 year old son that wants to start cross country. I just hope he will take it slow with me. I just have to find time in the day to run when hubby is home to watch our 2 year old.
I have never been a runner but have always wanted to run. I have been insulin resistant for about 3 years and I don't want to become diabetic so I really want to loose weight but nothing works so I am going to try running again. I posted a 5k to my neighborhoods website from a local winery. My son and I are thinking about trying it. We have until Oct 5 to get in shape. My whole neighborhood seems to want to join and start walking and maybe try the 5k. Personally I think it is great but I would rather my son and I work together alone at first. I am not worried about running with other but just want it to be OUR time away from the baby.

Good luck with day 2. We hopefully will get to start day 1 tonight if hubby gets home before dark.

If you are insulin resistant, make sure your doctor does bloodwork to check your levels if they haven't already. I was put on Metformin and had to switch to a low-ish-carb diet (about 100 per day). Even with medicine, restricting carbs, and exercise, the weight loss is verrrrry slow. I lose .5 - 1 pound per week, if that, sometimes nothing for a whole month. BUT, my A1C came down from 6.1 to 5.4 within a year. :)

I started at 282 lbs. It was rough, and I had some false starts and set-backs, but the feeling of finishing a 3-mile run for the first time since high school was definitely worth it.
