Finishing books

Grrr why can't I just stop reading a book if I'm not enjoying it much. For some reason I have to finish a book, or film, even if its boring me. Is anyone else like this? Or can you just stop reading it no matter what?

Actually I don't have the motivation to continue if I'm bored. I've bought books, only to leave them unread. Sometimes I end up buying the same book again:blushing: . Then I happen to get into it and finish the book.
It's funny how the same book can at one time be boring and then later be very stimulating.0 -
Lol,must just be me. For some reason I need to see what the ending is  thinking about it, I'm probably like this with most things, got to finish things.
Well at least I enjoy most books. And now I have a kindle I've gone worse. :bigsmile:0 -
I am exactly the same. I must finish a book once I have started. I always hope it will become interesting and well worth reading but oh so often I have been disappointed and think what an idiot I am. But old habits die hard .0

It depends. There have been a few books over the years that were so badly-written that I couldn't bear to finish them, and I can remember one that I just found really offensive so didn't finish it. Mostly though, I'm like you. If it's not a completely horrible book, but I'm just not really enjoying it, I generally will push through to the end. Silly really!0

Thinking about it there is one book that I couldn't finish, it was sociology boring I couldn't take anymore. And there was another book that had really horrible content so didn't finish it. So that's two books I didn't finish. I actually threw out the horrible book so no one else could read it. :laugh:0 -

It's kind of like forcing yourself to finish a meal. Which I used to do because of an ingrained childhood punishment response...
When it comes to books I don't have such a hard time putting a book down. Same with movies..if I'm not interested right away, I won't make a time investment.0 -
Interesting that you link it to food. I suppose growing up it is kinda drummed into you that you are supposed to finish a meal, so we did. But with books/films I just want to see the ending. I think it's a closure thing. Plus I appreciate the hard work put into them. I always think that something good is going to happen. :glasses:0

Too many good books out there to read; I have no problem putting a book down.0

True true. I read alot, and for the most I enjoy the read and have no problem finishing the book. I've been reading since I was 14, and in that time I think there has been about 5 books that I struggled to finish. It is these books that I struggled to finish. There was two that I never finished because they were to terrible. Generally I absolutely love reading.0 -
Lol  when I say I've been reading since I was 14, I mean that's the age I got into reading. I learned to read at a young age :bigsmile:0

I'm an optimist. I keep thinking, "Maybe it'll get better." But sometimes I get to the end and it never got better. :laugh:0

I agree. Only problem is that you don't know till you start reading it. And sometimes other people's reviews don't help. I downloaded a book on my kindle that had great reviews. Was really looking forward to it. Turned out to be crap. Oh well, at least I enjoy most books :bigsmile:0 -
When I was younger, I always felt that I needed to finish a book I started. I'm older (and wiser?) now, and sometimes I pick up and discard three books before I start one that I ultimately finish. I agree with some others . . . life is too short and my time too valuable to spend reading a book I'm not enjoying. That said, I'm currently reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (non-fiction, but reads like a novel) and THOROUGHLY engrossed in it! If you haven't already read it, I seriously recommend it.
Happy Reading!0
