I have my macros set at 20% carbs/ 44% fat/ 36% protein. I am wondering if I need to raise my fat a bit as I a struggle. Anyways, I normally will do a bulletproof coffee in the am, and then an avocado in the afternoon. What are some other ideas to add fat?

What did you do to add more fat?
  • I normally eat a tablespoon of coconut oil to up my fat and sometimes I eat olives. I add olive oil and bacon grease to my salads for a dressing and big fat boost. I have my macros set at 70% fat, 25% protein and 5% carb. I also include grass fed butter so that is another source of fat for me.

i make fat bombs. one i eat every night is 1/2 cup coconut oil, 1/2 cup local honey, 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/2 cup natural peanut butter, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. - 10 servings - (melt it all together on the stove, let it cool for a few minutes then pour into cupcake liners. freeze)

then i put more peanut butter on top :blushing:

My diary is open. Fats I eat a lot of : coconut oil, olive oil, nuts, chia seeds, almond butter, avocados, fatty meats (bacon, salmon, and ribeye), dairy products (I'm primal).

ETA: My macros are set to 15% carbs, 60% fat, 25% protein

Coffee with fat blended into it. Usually coconut oil and/or butter (many use Kerrygold, specifically). And yes, you must blend it. Stirring it in doesn't work so well.

LOL! I can imagine! When I first tried putting homemade coconut milk in dh's coffee or tea, he objected to the oil slick on top...

Just FWIW, I read somewhere on the Whole30 website that coffee can have a gluten-like effect on some people, and/or can cause blood sugar problems. It rings true to me. I know when I was steadily losing weight years ago on a low-carb diet, when I reintroduced coffee I stopped losing, and eventually got discouraged, gave up the diet (but not the coffee), and gained quite a bit more weight. Didn't seem to matter how healthy, sparingly, whatever, I ate, I still struggled with my weight. I didn't connect it with the coffee until I read that coffee discussion on Whole30.

(Edited to add: Just out of curiosity, I went back and looked for that info. While I couldn't find it, I did find someone quoted it in the W30 forum here: http://forum.whole9life.com/topic/7278-caffeine/?hl=coffee#entry72184 (scroll down to Kirsteen's comment posted 17 February 2013 - 06:07 PM). It's not exactly what I remember reading, but it's similar.)

When I finally stopped drinking coffee recently (I wanted more energy, and better sleep), I was able to start eating paleo/primal without the blood sugar crashes I'd experienced before. I detest herbal tea, but when I want something hot I can tolerate peppermint tea. Decaf coffee doesn't seem to make a difference. (Maybe it's something besides the caffeine that I react to? Don't know.)

That's why you blend it. It's more like a latte. I use one tbsp of EV coconut oil and a tbsp of Kerrygold butter.

Very interesting about coffee, my coffee consumption actually increased with paleo. I read It Starts with Food, but must of missed that part. I may have to play with my coffee consumption.

Thank you all for the advice. I'll try some of the methods.
