Wanting to start paleo but don't know where to start

Hi all, I am thinking i want to start paleo but not sure where to start. I have a history of fibromyalgia but more importantly had to totally change my eating habits due to having chronic hives for at least 4 or 5 months. I eliminated wheat/gluten, soy, eggs, grains, and dairy. When I cheat with eggs now I get so sick.
I had success with eating a low inflammation diet and elimination diet however, I am finding the hives starting to come back and have not yet been able to get over my potato chip addiction and eating potoatos. I am feeling alot better but there is still improvement needed. In my health and clearing the hives. I suspect I have leaky gut syndrome since my food intolerances seems to keep increasing and changing. I have looked at the GAPS diet and the SCD but do not feel I would be able to successfully stick to those. I am willing to try the broth thing but not sure if I should follow the paleo with the autoimmune modifications eliminating eggs, nuts, etc. Then that means I cannot have almond butters etc?
Any advice would be welcome!! Thanks guys. It will be hard to kick my potato habit. Can someone point me in the right direction.

I'm more primal than paleo as I eat some dairy. I love eating this way and I'm feeling stronger and have more energy than before eating this way!
Good luck,

Thank You I have been looking at these.0

Dig deep and find the power and at the very least cut out the potato chips completely.
Good luck, I am sure there is better health for you just waiting to be had.l The current situation isn't working, you can do it.0 -
Ironically, I didn't get rid of carb cravings (potato chips and bread) until I eliminated sugar. It was a few tough days, but once I was off... ALL carb cravings went away. Do I slip occasionally? Yes, but at least it's not an every day or 2x per day occurrence.
I know for a fact it was the sugar causing the cravings. Hard to tell what could be causing it with you since we can't see your diary.0 -
So when you say you cut sugar, do u mean processed or refined sugar or ALL sugar. I mean, I currently have some fruit in my day as it is one of the only things I can have for breakfast. I would be interested to hear more. Thank you.
I currently am having an outbreak so bad my whole face body is spotted my lips, face and eyes are swollen. I look like a science experiment gone totally wrong today.
But the sugar/carb connection makes sense and I have still been eating chocolate. Although it is dairy, nut and soy free I don't think that is helping.0 -

Google "paleo autoimmune" and "Whole30" for some good info. Someone posted a link in one of the recent paleo/primal discussion threads to an intro to the paleo autoimmune protocol but I don't have time to look for it to tell you more.
I'm currently doing that to help with joint pain, but it can help with skin and gut problems as well. For the last month I've eliminated grains, dairy, potatoes, sweeteners (sugar, honey, maple syrup, stevia, etc.), eggs, nightshades (tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, chili powder, paprika, oh yes potatoes fall under this category too), nuts, and caffeine (coffee, tea, chocolate). It might have been a bit hard at first but pain is a great motivator. Sounds like there's almost nothing left to eat but I've discovered a wide variety of vegetables to go with my meat and poultry. (And a little fish. Once in awhile we have salmon for a treat. Since I stopped using mayo -- eggs -- I don't really care for canned tuna anymore.)
It might not be the best idea to have fruit for breakfast. I know when I do that it makes me hungrier for the rest of the day. I don't know how sound the practice is, but I tend to eat fruit or a bit of yam at the end of the day if I'm coming up short on carbs. I've read I don't really need to eat fruit as I can get all my vitamins and fiber from veggies, but I still try to have some every day or every other day. (I had half a grapefruit this morning because dd wanted to share... and it was delicious! ...but I may get hungry before my usual time. Then again, I had a fair amount of fat in my breakfast (bacon and avocado) so maybe I won't.)
Without eggs, it's been interesting to find breakfast fare, but I've gotten in the habit of saving some meat left over from dinner and making a big salad for breakfast with meat and avocado, on mornings when I don't have time to fry up some bacon or sausage meat. It sounds weird but it's working.0 -
Practical Paleo might be a good resource for you. The author has separate chapters addressing specific health issues and the best "version" of paleo for tackling that specific problem.0

Those are all the foods I have yet to eliminate....plus there are some other foods that are shown to aggravate hives which I have to be careful of.
So onto eliminating potatoes, nightshade veggies and seeds and nuts (Which I was eating a lot of before) I know eliminating seeds and nuts but can I have nut butter such as almond butter or natural peanut butter since they are ground? Are they easier to digest if they are ground?
Thank you.0 -
Thank you for the info, I will probably get that book. It sounds like it has the info I need.0

Peanuts (and therefore peanut butter) are legumes, not nuts, so they are not actually paleo.0

It's not the whole vs. grinding, it's the chemical compounds in the nuts themselves that can aggravate autoimmune problems. Leptins, maybe? Something else, that maybe starts with "P" -- phytates? Besides the fact that nuts (except for macadamia nuts) are high in Omega 6.
However, I can testify to the fact that even if you leave off nuts, (and everything else on that autoimmune list), you can have an incredibly filling and satisfying diet. I wouldn't have thought it a month ago, but I'm going to bed in a few moments very happy indeed. (Our youngest has invented a recipe for baking salmon that is gourmet-to-the-max and absolutely delicious.)
Honestly, it's too late at night for me to try to drag anything else out of this tired brain.
(I'm definitely not being primal/paleo tonight... I shouldn't have gotten on the computer at all, much less this late, but it's the first chance I've had since breakfast and I wanted to log my dinner before going to bed so I wouldn't forget anything.)
p.s. a couple of times this week I've actually had to add in a cup of sweet potato, baked, drizzled with butter (still need to get around to clarifying the stuff but it doesn't seem to be adversely affecting my joints -- OTOH, when I finally do clarify it, maybe the joint pain will go away completely. You never know.). I had to add it in as a sort of dessert, after logging my dinner calories, so that my calorie count wouldn't be too low. I have NEVER had that problem before while watching what I eat. Amazing.0 -

Lectins and phytates.
Leptin is a hormone that affects fat storage and use.
The Omega 6 levels probably don't help, since too much Omega 6 and polyunsaturated fats (PUFA) leads to inflammation. Also, almond butter actually has one of the worst Omega profiles of the nuts (but it's still better than a lot of other foods, and it's one of the cheaper nuts to be had, which is why it's popular). According to Dr. Cordain's chart in The Dietary Cure for Acne, Almonds have 66.6% monounsaturated fats, 25.3% poly, and 8.1% saturated, and no Omega-3 fats.
Therefore, if you want to use nuts/nut butters/nut milks, you're going to be better off with macadamia nuts (6.3:1 O6:O3 and only 2% PUFA) or coconuts (4.4% MUFA, 1.3% PUFA, 94.3% saturated fat).0 -

Thanks for correcting my fuzzy memory of chemical compound names. I finally memorized Omega 3/Omega 6 but the other stuff hasn't stuck in my brain yet.
What do you know about sunflower seed butter? I read a blog post about making homemade sunflower seed butter as a peanut/almond butter substitute, but haven't really looked into it yet.0 -
Thanks for all the info about the nuts/butters. I will avoid them. Good thing I didn't stock up on them at the healthfood store. I am however bummed that I cannot eat my two packs of crunchmaster gluten free crackers made from nuts and seeds. I will donate them to my boss.
I am finding I need a high alkalyne diet to combat the chronic hives and angiodema I keep experiencing. I am to the point I am not eating much because everything gives me hives and facial, lip swelling. Yesterday I had lettuce with chicken with gf, egg free, dairy free dressing and a peach and an apple and I still broke out in worse hives than I already had from the day before. In an attempt to balance my ph I started lemon juice in my water in the am, I hope it doesn't give me another outbreak of hives.
I will be starting on a supplement of IntestiNew by Renew Life in powder form and be making bone broth in an attempt to heal my stomach so I can expand my food list eventually.
Thanks for all your info, it's been great.0 -
I'm not a doctor, but I'd eliminate sugar for sure. Don't eat a peach AND an apple. Loaded with sugar, which as the other poster said, is a carbohydrate, and will ironically make it harder to avoid potato chips and other starches.

Thanks for the info. RIght now I guess my main focus is finding foods that I CAN eat successfully without breaking out into hives or having my face swell up. All I had today was a salad with some olive oil and lemon on it for dressing. Spring Mix with chicken on it and dressing and my lip swelled again.
I had some lemon in my water this afternoon as it is supposed to help cleanse your liver and that seemed fine but didn't eat until after 7 cause I was scared to eat.0 -
Just wanted to give you my sympathy. I am new to primal so l don't feel I can give you expert advice but just wanted to say that soUnds really rough. I hope you get relief soon.0

Just wanted to say your local library probably has a few paleo books. Rob Wolf's Paleo Solution or Mark Sisson's Primal Blueprint are fairly common. Also the Hartwig's It Starts With Food is popular as well.
Any if those will give you a good understanding. Also each if their websites has a ton of good info. Just google.
If you want to skip all the reading and keep it simple, don't eat it if you can't pick it or kill it yourself!0 -
That sounds like a good place to start. I lasted only four days off potatoes before I fell off the wagon. I am concentrating on a lot of veggies and meat and some fruit but not a lot. After the allergist appointment I took an x large dose of antihistamine and seem to be fine now with the lemon juice.
It is a real trick I tell you, to find out what I do and don`t react to at any given time.0
