10th Percentile

So I'm 37 weeks and I went for an ultrasound last Friday because my midwife thought my baby might be breech!
I got the results today and thankfully she's turned around (after much hanging upside off my couch, downward dog and trips to the chiropractor)....the interesting part was the scan technician said that my baby was measuring in the 10th percentile for weight gain and it looks like she's 5lbs 5oz...

My midwife is sending me for 2 more scans to make sure baby is growing and that the placenta is doing its job otherwise they will induce as its better the baby be out and growing...

I stress thinking here I am doing everything I can to control my weight gain being considered an overweight momma to begin with (pre preg weight was 176lbs and I weighed today at 190lbs) and then to top it off I get diagnosed with almost GD " glucose intolerance" they call it and have to manage my carbs...I feel so defeated!

I was a little babe myself at 5 lbs 1/2 oz so I wonder if it can be hereditary?

I wonder if the scan is even right??? Aren't they usually way off with the estimates?

Ladies help me out here - anyone have anything they can offer to put me at ease? I appreciate you reading my rant!

None of the measurements I have heard of have been very accurate - I know so many people who have been told one way or the other and it was completely wrong. I really wouldn't worry too much.

Don't forget that percentiles are all about averages - my daughter was on the 25th when she was born but 2 1/2 years later is off the bottom of the scale - there is nothing wrong with her, she is just very little (my grandmother was only 4 foot 10 and my husbands sister is 4 foot 11 so plenty of small genes in the pool!).

My youngest sisters (who are twins) were born at 36 weeks weighing just over 4lbs each and they are both very healthy adults now the same height as me (although slimmer and healthier generally!).

Good luck what ever happens but I am sure you will both be fine :)

I had an ultrasound at 36 weeks for the same reasons (and did the same hanging off the couch/chiro lol) and my baby was small at that visit as well, 5 lbs and I think 10oz. The dr wasnt concerned at all. THose are just estimates remember and at this point they are gaining 1/2 lb per week or so!

Baby generally gains 1/2lb a week at the end of pregnancy, so at almost 5 1/2 lbs your baby is on track to be around 7lbs if you go to 40w...sounds pretty normal to me, I'm not sure why they're sounding the alarm...especially if you were 36 weeks when you went for the u/s?

Thank you Ladies! I feel a lot better now that I've had time to settle!

That's crazy that we were in the same boat! Did your little one turn?

Doctors just like to be super super super careful. But I will say, I gained 45 lbs in my pregnancy with my 1st son, and he has always been in about the fifth percentile or slightly lower, despite my husband and I both being average to slightly large babies (I have read that the baby size thing is pretty hereditary, but in our case, was not an accurate indicator). I periodically get worried about it but he keeps growing and that is much more important than his overall size. He's 21 months now and he's a spitfire. Plus, they do those estimates, but they are notorious for being totally unconnected to reality. They really can't tell, but its a way for the doctors to gauge whether they want to double check something, which means they will do so. Sounds like your doc had a poor bedside manner in this case that caused you a great deal of anxiety and they could have handled that better.

Anyway, don't kick yourself. That is a rabbit hole with no bottom. I wouldn't worry as long as you are somewhere between 1st %ile and 99th %ile. :)

My son was born at 37 weeks and he was only 5 lbs 14 oz so that doesn't seem THAT small to me, considering how off an estimate can be.

^^ same son is now in the 89% for weight and 91% for height at 5 years old so birth weight had absolutely no bearing on his weight later on.
