Push-up problem?

I'm new at weight-training and on my 2nd week of NROL4W. I used to be good at real push-ups (our band director made us do over a hundred a practice for missed notes/steps!), but now, 20 years later, I can only do about 12 "girlie" push-ups before I'm nearly dead. With NROL4W, we are supposed to do real push-ups on an incline and work our way down to real push-ups on the floor. I've noticed that my elbows and wrists tend to painlessly pop at times, but occasionally it feels as if my left elbow is nearly out of joint. I have a feeling it is a lack of supporting muscle around my joints. However, there are days when it is not acting up and I feel strong enough to move my incline down a bit. Should I, or should I stay where I am until my elbow feels consistently comfortable?

To be honest, I would not push it (no pun intended). You should be careful with joints and err on the side of caution as any damage/injury, even minor, can set you back.0

Have you tried using push-up stands? Because I broke my wrist years ago, sometimes push-ups make my wrists tweak and pop, but that is lessened with the push-up stands. If you don't have them, you can use a pair of dumbbells and try that out.
If you still have the issues, then I would take it easy like Sara said.0 -
I would jump on mobilitywod and search for "creating torque in pushup position" or something along those lines. Make sure you are doing that. Also, make sure the elbows aren't flaring too much. (I have no idea why people do this as it seems so much harder to me )
But yeah, take it easy and go to your limits not what a book tells you to do. Injuries really do suck.0 -

serious??!! It's like the greatest collection of mobility stuff on the net. I'm reading Kelly Starrett's book now and full of great info.0 -

Thanks for the site! I've spent a good bit of the morning looking around and learned a good bit. Bookmarked for future reference!0 -
