So, is anybody interested in this at all? I used to play FFXI, and it was probably my favorite MMO of all the ones I've played to date, so I'm quite excited for this game.
Beta applications are available now and is opening on the 25th! Hope to see some of you MFP people on there eventually.

Eh....I'm on the fence. I played FFXI for many years and also was my favorite MMO. Bahamut server, Velgadess /wave /dance /panic
It was a bad addiction for me. From when it came out in the NA PC release in 2002? (shoot, I'm getting old, I can't remember! lol) to Fall of 2009, it's all I did when I wasn't working or sleeping. I loved FFXI for the friends I made. It forced you to work together with others if you wanted to accomplish things. The server community was small and player reputations matter a lot. If you were an *kitten* to people, they would remember you, which in turn would bite you in the *kitten* because then people would not want to party up with you and you could only solo so much. This was of course before they abolished the level 75 cap.
I did play FFXIV for a little bit when it was released. It was very pretty and made my computer at the time cry like a little baby. I had to play on lower-medium settings for the graphics or it was unplayable. I stopped though because I just don't have the time. I can't dedicate hours of game play to do things. I went from 7-8 hrs a day, everyday to now 2-4 hrs a week. If I do go back to FFXIV: A Realm Reborn, it's because of the friends that played FFXI will be there. For me it was always about the team game play, working together to accomplish stuff. I get bored real quick playing solo.0 -
I have to agree with everything you've said. Whenever people ask me about FFXI and my thoughts (and hopes!) of FFXIV, I'm reminded of what a great community the game used to have. This is one of the biggest reasons I want FFXIV to be successful.0

I still play FFXI. Someday I would love to try FFXIV but first will need a pc. At the moment I play FFXI on my 360.0

Not a lot of interest...FFXI was like having a full time job. 5 man party camping at the beach to kill a little flying bug thing for hours. Wasn't my thing.0

I have a soft spot in my heart for Final Fantasy, but I prefer to solo things so not sure if I would enjoy it based on what ya'll said about it. I play WoW now, but I'm going to quit when my time runs out in a couple of weeks because I'm just losing interest.0
-
I also used to play FFXI, but then quit because I just didn't have time for it anymore. Though that was the old FFXI. With the latest changes to the game, I hear it's super fast getting to level cap and I just don't have much interest in it now.
I know they are planning on making FFXIV more casual-friendly, so I doubt it'll be anywhere near the level of commitment as old-school XI just to level up. But if it fosters the same kind of community and group-content that there was in XI, I'll be all over it. I think it's the prevalence of solo play that just doesn't have me as hooked in a lot of the more recent MMOs that have been released.0 -

In regards to your comment on solo play, watch this video. You'll see as they go through a few zones that the the group exp seems similar to old FFXI. I think the questing for solo is just either filler/secondary option.

I played FFxi from NA release, for about 6 years all together. It was a great MMO that was underrated by the MMORPG community.
I will play FFxiv if they can manage to not make a WoW clone. Heck, if they just did a reboot of FFxi with new textures and story I would play in a heartbeat.0 -
I used to play FFXI too for the first year it was released and loved the community. Unfortunately, FFXIV doesn't stand out from any other MMO.
I got into the Beta and the opening area is much better and felt more friendly, as well character customization had more choices (and there's male miqo'te now!), but then you step outside and have to compete for monsters and it's just... every other MMO. It doesn't bring anything new and I just felt like I was wasting my time.
What I love about GW2 is how it encourages you to work with other players. You're not fighting for monsters or nodes and it rewards you for working together on quests. Wish FFXIV had more of that.0 -

I remember FFXI to be the opposite of what you're saying. People ALWAYS were competing for mobs. Maybe your server was underpopulated?
Regardless, there will always be competition for resources early on (alpha, beta, or release) just because the average level range of all players is near the same point still.0 -
I played a blm and rdm (refresh plox) when I played ffxi. Started up a thamaturge or whatever for ffxiv and was pretty bored and confused right off the bat. The inventory system and menus were a nightmare and it lacked that "final fantasy" feeling. Once they started revamping the game though it became darn near enjoyable.
I have legacy status so I automatically get invited to the beta. Will definitely be giving it a shot.0 -

Update us with game info, screenshots etc please!
I also played back in 1.0 during Alpha and Beta. I agree it was overly confusing and felt like a huge chore to battle. I'm desperately waiting for my chance to try ARR myself.0 -
Will do. Have you checked out the benchmark yet?0

I am also waiting for FFXIV, but I am afraid I do not have as much free time as I used to when I got FFXI when it first came out,
but out of all the MMO's I have played, FFXI gave me some memorable moments, I still remember doing one of the Promyvions with my linkshell when Chains of Promathia came out, if was the final one we had to do to get access to Lufiase Meadows,
long story short, every member in my raid party died except for me, a black mage that ran out of MP (the bane of all casters), the boss mob had only 1-3% life left, so I had to use my 2 hour ability and I guess luck was totally on my side, I had lived enough to cast 3 spells and bam, boss died and everyone in the raid party got access to the new land, everyone was flipping out that I actually survived.
I am hoping there will be moments like that in XIV.0 -

You misread my post. I never said you didn't compete for mobs in FFXI. You don't have to in GW2. I just said I really liked the community in FFXI. You were pretty much forced to group up, and everything took so long you had nothing else to do but chat while you waited lol. I remember attempting to go back and play it after playing WoW and it was painfully slow. I couldn't stand to play it anymore, but I still have fond memories.
And we're not suppoosed to share screenshots and stuff of FFXIV because of the non-disclosure agreement.0 -

You're right, I did misread. And N.D.A.-SHMEN.D.A.0 -
Decided to revive this thread instead of starting a separate. Now that that the release date is drawing near, anyone playing for sure?0
-
Probably going to give it a whirlybird even though I don't have a whole lot of faith. Boyfriend played in the beta and it feels like they shoehorned a bunch of WoW and GW2 into the ol' XIs. I recently server-hopped in XI so I still probably won't give that up super-soon... but I have vague hope for XIV.0

My wife and I are both playing FFXI and FFXIV. We're legacy members of FFXIV on the Ragnarok server.0
-
I have all ready pre-ordered FFXIV and have been playing the beta on and off. It's fun, but not the same as XI.0
-
Played the beta a bit (tried out conjurer) and was enjoying what I saw. Waiting for the next beta to start up so I can give black mage a go. It's a lovely game, maybe a bit wordier than I would like, but I won't have a solid opinion until I've gotten significantly further in. I know that as a white mage I was pretty disappointed in my dps capabilities. Sure it's a healing class, but when solo leveling it's nice to have more than 2 buttons to hit (one of which a DOT to occasionally refresh while the other you spam constantly).0

I tried out the Gladiator during P3 beta week (till lv 15), and a few levels of Conjurer & Monk (<5). I like how we are able to play all classes on one toon, and I think the world is looking quite pretty. I’ve pre-ordered, and am looking forward to playing the Marauder in the next beta. Likely am gonna end up a Warrior :bigsmile:0
