Pre and post long run food/drink

What do all of you eat and drink before and after your longest runs? I am still looking for ideas. Bananas and scrambled eggs seem to work well, but that gets pretty boring.

Mine is boring but it works for me - I like to keep things consistent. About an hour before heading out I have some sort of bread, a banana, and coffee. I don't like too much in my stomach. After the run I always have a recovery drink waiting in the car (I drive to the local greenway every Sunday morning for my long run). Then I head home and have a big bowl of Kashi cereal with almond milk and some Greek yogurt. By then it's still early on Sunday morning and I usually snack quite a bit the rest of the morning on nuts & fruit until lunchtime.

I had a piece of toast with copious amounts of cashew butter on it, along with a sprinkling of salt, since the cashew butter wasn't salted, before my over 9 mile run on Saturday and felt great!! Also, some black coffee. I didn't do anything special afterwards, I don't think. I used to have problems after longer runs, but so far, not anymore. We'll see as I get above 10-12 miles. I think the extra fat helped me out.

I had a honeybun and a cold cup of coffee before my 16 mile run Sunday morning. I'm not really that picky. I just want a little something to eat. One of my personal favorites is a couple of waffles with some honey drizzled on the top. .

I don't do anything different after a long run than for any other run.

My breakfast on long run days are usually a bagel with peanut butter or cream cheese and maybe a banana or yogurt if I feel like I needed it. A bit of coffee too (not too much!) if I can tolerate it that day. (Trust me, too much coffee is not fun on a long run.) I can get quite dehydrated and even famished afterwards so I have lots of water and an electrolyte drink right away (ie Nuun tablets) and some snack or protein bar to tide me over until I can have an actual meal. A good recovery meal does seem to make a difference in how I feel the rest of the day and so does a good dinner the night before the run, rather than the morning of, for me:)

Geek yogurt, honey and hemp hearts and I'm golden! So much energy last for a Lon time does not cause me any stomach issues. It took me 2 years of running to find that one. Good luck finding what works for you. :)
  • Before run...A bagel with cream cheese or a couple tsp of PB...coffee too! I take a small protein bar with me and since its summer a couple of cliff shot bloks and of course an electrolyte drink...

After run...protein...fat (good fat) like half avacado...big salad or yogurt with cheerios...
