lactose issues/IBS(tmi!)

I never thought that I had issues with lactose. When I was around 20 I started showing all the classic signs of IBS, I never bothered to be diagnosed but I pretty much showed all the signs. The stomach problems would come and go and never caused me any serious grief. When I went paleo I cut out everything for five weeks and then did well except I still had diarrhea pretty regularly. I then decided to add back dairy and noticed it caused me to itch but would eat it anyways. Things have gotten a lot worse lately and I think its from the dairy, but I am wondering if its IBS or some other issue.
If you are lactose intolerant and didn't find out until adulthood what were your symptoms? I have about 2oz of cheese a day and half&half in my coffee. I have been having severe diarrhea multiple times a day and last night my left lower side, which I assume was my colon, was killing me. I didn't eat anything bad yesterday except for the cheese, which I am no longer going to consume.
If you had lactose issues, IBS, or any other stomach issues what did you cut out to improve your health? I am getting back to paleo/primal and am wondering if there are any foods that are paleo that could still be causing issues. I am wondering if the nuts could be bothering me, sometimes it seems like I get stomach aches after eating nuts. I would really like to correct whatever is going on by diet change and not a visit to the Dr.

Over the winter I was diagnosed with IBD. My symptoms included diarrhea with bleeding and having to go the washroom 8 to 10 times a day. I immediately went to see my doctor (I suggest you do the same). I went for a colonoscopy and was put on meds right away in February. I have been doing crossfit for some time now and needed to go on a 4 week program and eliminated many foods. It was very similar to paleo and in some cases even more restrictive than paleo. As of last week I am off the meds and I really do believe the medication treated my condition and my change in eating certainly helped with the symptoms. Everyone will have "trigger" foods and each person is different. I plan to stay on my current eating regime. SInce February I have lost 10% body fat and only a few pounds on the scale since I gained lean muscle mass. Again I suggest visiting your doctor to discuss what you are currently going through.0

Pain form the lower digestive system might be diverticulitis ( nuts and seeds getting stuck in little pockets). Sounds like your digestive system is a little out of wack. Probiotics and ferment foods can help heal it.

I've had a lactose issue as far as i can remember, but never saw a doctor about it. Its the worst discomfort that you can imagine! I've never been a fan of milk yogurt or cheese, so I just don't eat em.0

I never thought I had a lactose issue either until I completed a Whole30. When I reintroduced dairy, I had severe bloating, cramping, and diarrhea for a few hours afterward. Almost without fail, I would experience the dumping syndrome, along with severe chest/gallbladder pain, every time I would have any diary products. I'd had episodes like that before going paleo, but never attributed them to one specific type of food (as I was eating all kinds of crap). I cut dairy back out and drank a lot of bone broth over the course of a month, and now I can have small amounts of dairy with no problem (maybe a tiny bit of bloating/gas).
I do notice that my intestinal issues will come back if I continually assault my system for a few days in a row though. Today, for example, I got really sick after eating something with cream cheese and swiss in it. I ate the exact same thing yesterday with no ill-effects, but I think having three days in a row with a lot of lactose (and some grains thrown in one day) has done enough damage to my gut lining for the symptoms to reappear. I've pulled my bone broth out of the freezer and intend to work on repairing my gut lining for the next few days.0 -
epcooper,I can relate.
I never thought I had dairy issues until I did a whole 30.I re-introduced it and immediately I had bloating, gas and congestion.
I also have a similar issue with food being fine one day and the next day the same food will cause me issues.Avocado is one I notice the most.If I eat a whole avocado 2 days in a row,on the second day I will be ill, heartburn, bad stomach and the feeling it's just not digesting.
Trying a whole 30 with the auto immune protocol might be the way to go.It would mean cutting out nuts, nightshades and all dairy. It would be a good way to see what's truly bothering you0
