Eating more carbs with exercise?Diabetes risk/slow thyroid

***The Back Story*** I'm new to this group, and I'm trying to sort out my nutrition. I have just under 7 weeks to modify my diet. My a1c is 6.0. I realize that's not too bad,but my triglycerides are through the roof. My body's inability to process carbs correctly has depressed my thyroid. Other than that, my cholesterol, et cetera, is perfect. Because I am 25, my physician wants me to cut carbs and raise protein in order to manage my sugar and, hopefully, help my thyroid. My follow up is the 2nd week of September. If I have continued to gain weight, my a1c is the same/higher,and my thyroid is still depressed, I have to be put on meds. I don't want that. So, here's my question:
***The Question*** When I burn a lot of calories, MFP raises my carb goal for the day. I am still trying to figure out my intake. When my goal is raised, should I eat the amount of carbs I have gained from exercise, or strictly stick to my original goal and ignore MFP's suggestion?***

I am borderline hypoglycemic (have always been), and eating carbs also jacks up my triglycerides (gee, thanks liver!). When I tell people this, I always get a crazy look, as if that is not possible. I'm sorry you are having this problem, but it's good to have company!!!
I ended up changing the macros on MFP, because the default is like 55% of your daily intake - which would have me sleeping at my desk all afternoon with my clogged arteries.
I now have protein and carbs set to 35% each, and my fat is set at 30% (fat intake has no measurable effect on my cholesterol levels). When I can eat approximately equal grams of protein and carbs during the day, I feel pretty good. I would tinker with the ratios and bump up your protein goal and then try to stick with that and stay equal or under on carbs. Exercise helps with A1c and regulation of blood sugar, so I think it is ok to eat more after exercising, just watch the proportions of carbs/protein.
My cholesterol is "ok" now, but I'm having a new increase since Dr. put me back on the pill to attempt to control adenomyosis and avoid a hysterectomy (liver doesn't want to process estrogen either, and it gets angry and pumps out even more cholesterol in response).
Would be interested to hear if this helps you out. :-)0 -
I hope that you can avoid meds, but if you can't, it's not the end of the world. I have been on thyroid medication for years and I'm grateful that I get the opportunity to feel "normal." If "normal" comes in a pill form for my body, then so be it.0

follow your doc's direction...lower carbs and raise protein. Carbs=sugar. Do you have an endocrinologist? I suggest you get a referral for a second opinion on your needs. Remember no canned foods, no packaged foods...everything fresh. Lots of hidden sugar, salt and other things you don't want to put in your tummy in stuff you buy.0

I was laid off from my previous job 3 months ago when the company shut down. So, no health insurance, and not a lot of money for referrals. I try to eat what I can that's fresh, but it's not always within my budget.0 -
My main question is do I need to eat the carbs that MFP adds or just ignore them.
For example:
I go kayaking and burn 900 calories, mfp not only says "Hey you get 900 extra calories" it also bumps up my "carb goal" by around 25 give or take a few. Should I stick to what I originally have as my goal, or should I eat what MFP has added due to exercise. i know a lot of people eat back half of the calories they burn, but what about the carbs?0 -
Eat only to your set goal. You should try to avoid eating your "earned calories/carbs". Hope that helps
