Hi my name is joy. I would love to enter a competition (not sure which class) but not sure this is possible for me. Reasons I am 42 years old, still a bit fluffy, the mother of 3 children including a set of twins, have a very hectic life, I work full time mainly shifts and my kids have special needs so are very demanding, and I love food. Despite this I would love to do this for me any tips on diet, and just how to find competitions etc. I am not afraid of the hard work, already lift and workout 5-6 days a week. My weight loss has stalled at the moment. I am 5ft4 and weigh 148lbs. Is this a pipe dream or is it achievable.

  • I am from Canada, and I am starting my training in 2 weeks. It takes A LOT, of dedication and time. So if you can somehow work your gym sessions in between taking care of your children, or if you have an at home gym. I don't see this unable to achieve. Where I am from we have a class for those women who are in their late 40's or 50's... pretty sure. I am unsure about age. Where are you living? I would google the Bodybuilding association of your area, and check out all the info there! :)

You just need to find a GOOD trainer, who can work your eating and gym sessions around your lifestyle!

Hi Joy! You can do anything if you put your mind to it and do the work. I am training for my first NPC show in March 2014. I work FT and am married with a child. Bodybuilding is an expensive hobby so make sure you are in a good place financially before you begin.

There a lot of informative articles on bodybuilding.com on everything you could possibly want to know about competing: training, supplementation and most important: nutrition. Hopefully, you have jump started your metabolism by now. If not, check out the articles on Bodybuilding.com. Good luck!

Hey Joy, you can do it, but it will require some serious time management on your part. Nutrition is a large piece of it, since you have to eat enough to fuel your workouts, but not so much you stall or reverse your fat loss. The key is to finding that perfect balance. You want to eat as much as possible, while still burning fat. The key is NOT to eat as little as possible. You can tell who those girls are on stage because when they get up there, they have a nice midsection, but when they turn around that part where their glutes are supposed to be is flabby. This happens because their body cannibalizes the muscle to make up for the calories they aren't eating. Learn as much as you can!
  • I have done several competitions now and each time I contemplate NOT doing another...but then a few weeks go by and I change my mind yet again. I am now to the point where I LOVE competition and am training for a new category yet again....I won't lie and say it is easy because it's not. Time management, financial ability and MOST of all-is support. I couldn't have done it without support of family, friends and a good training team. I had a really hard time finding a good trainer/coach and finally have found my home and am actually working with them as part of their team :) Please let me know if I can be of any assistance :D Good luck!!!

    It's totally achievable.

That said, I have to give huge props to the women who do it with a family. I was lucky, it's jus me and my his and who was crazy supportive. I could not have done it without his help. He did a ton of meal prep. I can't imagine how hard it would be to do with kids. People do it, for sure, it's just challenging.

To echo others, find a good coach. Make sure you understand and are on board with their methods (like other have mentioned its not about eating as little as you can, some coaches will have you doing that).

    Good luck!
