Not Hungry...Snacks that are AIP Friendly?

Hey guys, I have been paleo for nearly 4 months now. I feel great, I have lost roughly 10-15 pounds (but inches seem more) and my health has improved significantly. However I have been finding that I am not eating nearly enough, at first I thought under 900 wasnt a big deal once in awhile but I have started to notice it is pretty consistent. I'm just not hungry (which is normal...but since my diet is so limited on AIP I dont even think about cheating because I get very sick.) I am on the Autoimmune Protocol so I cant have nuts, and I am also sticking with the FODMAP. Can anyone suggestions some snacks that are AIP friendly that can boost my calorie intake?

My new favorite snack is Steve's Original Paleo Stix. I also like Pale-ola snacks (she will custom an order without nuts if you ask).0 -
Not sure what you can eat (AIP wise) But a table spoon of coconut oil is always good full of cals + fat!0

That sounds wonderful but I can't have garlic, paprika, or onion I would eat those for days otherwise!!! lol0 -

Just eat it raw? Haven't tried that! I will have to0 -
Avocado?
Also, re: coconut oil - Coconut's a tree nut. Is it not considered off limits on AIP? If not, what makes it different? (Genuinely curious.)0 -
nuts?
I often snack on macadamia nuts and almonds0 -

I use very limited quantities of coconut oil. I am allergic to Olive Oil...I honestly usually have a routine...cook bacon in morning and leave pan on stove and then cook the rest of my food in it.
PaleoMom considers coconut oil a "gray area" from her website: "Whole coconut products (coconut butter, coconut cream concentrate, creamed coconut, coconut flakes, coconut chips, fresh coconut) should be consumed in moderation (due to being very high in inulin fiber and moderately high in phytic acid). Coconut milk and coconut cream (not to be confused with creamed coconut or coconut cream concentrate) should be guar-gum free and limited to 1 cup per day. Coconut oil is fine if well-tolerated."
I honestly have a cup of coconut oil a week MAYBE..I love bacon grease! haha.
I am by no means an expert either...so much information on this diet!! Especially when I add in FODmap stuff but I feel a million times better. I do miss nuts...but I may try reintroduce later once my gut heals a bit more.0 -
Yea I just take a spoon and eat it out of the jar...then I rub it on my hands/neck/face, I have an addiction.0

Hi Sprinkelss,
Do you have a copy of Practical Paleo yet? She has a whole FODmap free, autoimmune protocol section, with a ton of recipes. If you don't have it, I think you might find it really helpful:

Pork rinds!!!0

I've also read that when you eat a limited diet, food can just become much less appealing, generally. People who eat varied diets tend to eat more. So, I wonder if this might be a factor in your loss of appetite? I don't have a magic wand solution (aside from the Practical Paleo book, which is pretty awesome), but this might explain things a bit.0

Coconut isn't a tree nut, it's a droup.1

Part of it is Paleo and I think you nailed the other part pretty well. I can't even have garlic...so I pretty much eat the same couple things, I used to love cooking but yeah. I cannot go out to eat anymore because A. I feel ridiculous asking what spices they use B. Sometimes they lie/not knowledgeable and I end up sick. But my fibro has gotten so much better...its a trade off. lol
I have been trying to make more juices and smoothies midday/after working out which is helping with my macros. I have been stuck at 160 I think I may need to up my calories closer to 1500.
Also! I have that booK! I got it on Kindle and it really has weird formatting...Made me sad so I am trying to wait until my next paycheck to actually buy it. It is a wonderful resource. I also cannot wait until PaleoMom release her autoimmune book.
Edited to Add: Thanks for all your ideas guys!!0 -
Hey, one other suggestion . . . it's not a food suggestion, but have you read "Fatigued to Fantastic," by Teitlebaum? It has a horrible title, I know, but it's specifically geared to people with fribro and myofascial pain syndrom (which my sister has). It's been really helpful for her!0

Honestly, when I feel like you do I drizzle some steamed veggies with yummy oil and eat it out of the bowl with my fingers. My toddler eats a ton of veggies this way. We eat broccoli like it is popcorn, in front of the TV or hanging out on the bed. It is easier for both of us to get in more veggies when it isn't competing with the other delicious things on our plates during mealtimes and are much more tempting than veggies. Either that or I cut an avocado in half, get rid of the pit and just scoop it out bite by bite for the two of us.1

I do AIP too. Here's a list of things I snack on: homemade (or in a pinch store bought) kale chips, coconut butter, liver pate on veggies, berries with coconut milk on top, yam with coconut butter and cinnamon, gelatin panna cotta (recipe here: http://cavegirlplusone.com/recipes?recipe_id=6047839), homemade ice cream (http://cavegirlplusone.com/recipes?recipe_id=6048017) Good luck!0
