Incredible blog outlining your mindset of maintaining through the years--thank you for that insight and being so open and honest.
Since I was once down 80+ pounds several years ago, only to regain it, and now again down and starting on maintenance, I have a question for you...
Do you find yourself 'trapped' in the persona of being a 'weight loser/maintainer' at the expense of transitioning to some other type of hobby/activity that would exercise your creative mind (vs the 'stats & numbers' analytical side?).
I know I will probably have to keep logging in my food & exercise for quite some time, but I want to avoid the pitfalls you've outlined in your first two years--in hindsight, how would you avoid those obsessive behaviors if you could do it all again?
My failure to maintain my loss last time was I had the 'diet mentality' and I never knew I had to address the mental issues of why I used food as my drug of choice. This time I've been working on those issues while losing weight and it has made my current journey far less stressful and more meaningful.
Thanks again for your contributions and I wish you continued success.0 -

Hi! thanks so much for your note and comments, and congrats on your current success! Well, you nailed it--I think my need to stay fit and maintain, happening at the same time I was learning to be a stay-at-home mom, I'm guessing zapped any energy I had at finding a new career. I figured I'd stop work for a year or so and now it has been a lot longer! The good news is, I did find something I love more, this healthy lifestyle and hopefully will find a paying career with it at some point.
As for the numbers? I don't know--it's important to use the numbers and learn from them. It's just this warped self-pereception takes over sometimes and you lose track of reality. I think knowing when to stop and take those steps back to keep yourself in check are key because there's a fine line between being "on it" and being obsessive and it's not always clear to anyone.
But, on the food/eating topic, I didn't have a major problem with breaking out of the calorie and dieting mode. Once I learned to average calories for the week, I stopped worrying about going over and under each day, and usually stayed at plan. And it has always been important to me to keep eating the things that make me happy...wine, dessert when I go want it, etc....I don't think you can maintaing by denying yourself of that kind when it isn't the norm, and as long as you are exercising. Oh, one thing I failed to mention about diet and food is getting into micro-managing the protein/carbs/fats----that's one thing I did start to track and it made me dizzy after awhile, I did back down from it eventually because I think my general diet is good and on track.
Good luck with everything, and let me know if you need more support!0 -
I'm completely new to the maintenance lifestyle and your post and blogs have given me lots to think about so thanks for sharing.
In my 11 months of losing I worried I was becoming obsessed with the logging, and we'll see how I do while maintaining. My goal for now is to keep logging as that's what got me to lose the weight, it's just a question of if I'll keep it up long term.
It was good for me that shortly after reaching my goal weight I went on a trip to Africa and had no internet access so couldn't log. Although I did write down everything I ate in a small notebook just so I could see on paper how much I was consuming.
Anyway, thanks for your post Robin.0 -

So I went back to my Anniversary post, after a 3 month long experiment in not logging, and guess what? It was a complete disaster!
Not to say I was out of control, but I can see if I go any further down this path it will be. Anyway, re-reading all my old posts and getting myself back to what works: Logging included in maintenance, for life I think0 -
Interesting to hear that Robin. I've been not logging weekends but continuing logging during the week since April 27th 2013, with good results. I've been tempted to try not logging for a longer period but I have a feeling that over the long term my weight may well gradually creep up again.
I think I may continue as I am for a while longer yet.
Incidently, today marks my 1st anniversary on MFP. It's been a good year with a loss of 26 pounds and I've been maintaining pretty much since Christmas. I love the new me, and I never want to put back on those 26 pounds. I've learnt not to eat when I'm bored and also a lot about portion sizes! Long may my new lifestyle continue :-)0 -

Wow, fantastic that you reached your 1 year anniversary Congrats!!! You should do a little write up too--everyone would learn so much from you!!
The no-logging for me was going ok at first but then I went on vacation and guess what happened? I came home and suddenly my "base" was much bigger and not having the metrics to back up what I was eating, I started to feel those jeans tighten. Nothing horrible...and I don't weigh myself so am not sure what the damage was, but it's enough to make me realize the metrics are really important!0 -
^That's why I keep logging, because I'm afraid my intake will creep up. Also, with the fitness aspect of it, I'm trying to keep good track of my macros, especially protein.0

great point about the macros...I did that very carefully for awhile but haven't looked at it too closely lately because I eat the same stuff all the time--everything is super-steady when I'm on track at least!0
