Final zombies 5k run I'm too slow!

Hi everyone, I'm about to start week 8 but haven't yet done 5k, I'm just far too slow. I went on an experimental run on weds to see how far I can run without stopping and did about 2k in 20 mins plus 5 mins warm up/cool down. Anyway, I'm worried about the final run as I might manage my 4k route in the time but not 5k. I've been running all the free forms and am still delighted with my progress.

I know the NHS c25k is about running for 30 mins, is the zombies one the same? It was my original aim!

Even if you can't finish the 5K in 30 minutes, you can still probably do it. Just slow down and keep running.

I completed the C25K program in mid-July and ran my first 5K at the end of July (well, first in over a decade, that is). I finished it in just under 40 minutes the day of the 5K, BUT I FINISHED IT.

You can totally do it. Don't worry about the 30 minutes. You will get there eventually.

I'm pretty sure that the final run doesn't REQUIRE that you complete the 5K in 30 minutes - that would rule out far too many beginning runners. I'm only on week 6, day 1, though, so not sure.

Don't worry about it, and I'd also recommend reading Running for Mortals, by John "the Penguin" Bingham. Here's one of his columns:

I think it's quite common for people who finish a c25k varriation (whether it be with zombies or not) that although they built up to 30 mins of running, 30 mins isn't quite 5k yet. I was the same. Once I got up to 30 mins of running though, I decided to just run until I hit 5k, just under 39 mins. But that was the point, once I got to 30 mins straight running, I found that I could continue running for 9 more mins to finish the distance.

You just have to decide what your next goal is. After I got up to 5k, I steadily increased my distance over time and ended up running 29:52 in a 5k 2 months later. And 6 months after I was up to the 5k distance, I ran my first half marathon.

So speed comes in time. Personally, I've found that I can make huge speed gains by running lots and lots of easy miles. Getting up to 20 miles a week of running is what has brought my 5k down to where it is now (8:50 per mile). And now that I'm getting to 30 miles a week, I'm seeing speed gains again just not so dramatic.

Anyway, it sounds like you're doing great! Keep running! And think about signing up for a 5k. Races are great for motivation!

I do Zombies, Run...but I only ever walk it. I walked thru the 5K trainer after I realized the running was just tearing up my knee and hip. I walked thru the 5K finale and it said I made it without any real issue. It kept telling me to hurry as the chopper was waiting to take off, but it did wait. I believe it took me a little over an hour to do as I walk about a 3mph pace. I'd feel comfortable giving it a try if I were you!

It took me around 45 minutes to run my final 5k. lol
  • Thanks,I'm totally happy to be able to run and fully intend to build up the extra distance afterwards. I was mostly worried it'd know how far I was running and tell me I'd not completed the mission. It doesn't sound like that will happen. :-)
  • BTW, I love the penguin description! Amusing but true. :-)
