still on the beach?

The south beach diet is the only formal diet that made sense to me.
I've never done it, per se, but know a lot about the principles and read the books, and follow many of the guiding principles.

Is anyone from this group still doing it?

I'd love a few buddies who understand what I'm trying to do.

I've been eating "slow carb" and "low CRAP" for about 12 years now and was able to lose weight and keep it off all these years.

I'd like to fine tune those results now, and am trying to lose about 8LBS.

Anyone still using this "way of eating and living"?
If so, reply here, or feel free to friend me!

  • Started SB again August 18. And you are right, the best thing out there...totally makes sense.

    Look for my friend request.

I am on day 9 phase 1...in the zone and feeling so much better.

Only lost 2 pounds the first week, but this time focus is on how I feel.

I suffer from degenerative osteo arthritis and walking without pain is my goal...itty bitty cute clothes is fun, but not my prime reason for losing.

    Starting weight 154.6
    Goal 135 FIRST GOAL

After I get to 135 will continue on...but everything in my closet fits me at 135 ... my lowest on SB.

    Friend request accepted.

Yes, the more I read and learn about SBD the more sense it makes. not ever detail, no, but as a general approach to selecting healthy foods, yes.
And, unlike many on MFP, I have NOT counted calories all these years in maintenance. To me that's not sustainable. What is sustainable, for ME, is to have some general principles to follow everyday. Will I follow them 24/7? Probably not. But knowing is half the battle.

When I read his phase 2 and phase 3 "foods to enjoy" list, it's how I eat. The only difference is I tend to use corn tortillas because flour ones wreck my tummy. But in his gluten book he offers corn as an alternative.

Anyway, I'm going to call myself a beacher and keep eating the way I'm eating.

I'm peri-menopausal, or menopausal and now firmly believe menopause is a form of insulin resistance. how my body reacts to food has changed drastically.

SBD is a pretty reasonable low-glycemic approach.
  • Hi there...

I am going to enter the basics...not every lettuce leaf and radish...just to get keep myself focused. I write down my menu daily anyway...so this will help me see the overall picture.

I lost 40 on SB without ever once entering a calorie on any website...Dr. A did all the heavy lifting for us, designing the program.

So my calories will not even be something that I am looking at...I am really just looking at more the proteins, fats, sugars (which will not even be accurate since fruit sugars will be in the mix)...anyway...that is how I am going to roll.

I plan on entering everything cept unlimited veggies I guess. There was not smart phones around when I did sb back in 2008 - 2009...and now with the addition of the scanner, it makes things so much easier.

Just joining "The Beach"....Phase 1, Day 5....glad to be here. Hoping to see lots of chatter here! I was invited by Celebrate2013 and I'm thrilled to be here! I have dropped 5.6 pounds so far...what's not to love about that. Still having a few issues with feeling a bit weak and some leg cramps but I'm thinking it's because I'm not getting enough calcium.....gonna tweak those numbers right away!

    Nanc,
I had to laugh about the "phone" comment. While I'm pretty darn computer savvy I have a "dumb" phone...all the thing does is ring, it doesn't even take a message.....so all that fancy stuff means nothing to me! I'm happy to hear it helps you though, whatever works right?

Smile. I try to not eat a lot of processed foods, junk foods etc. I try to eat whole foods.
I was raised on utter rubbish. And didn't learn to cook til my late 30s. I survived on packaged meals and fast food.
Somewhere around Y2K (lol) I started learning to cook and eat, and studied Mediterranean cuisine/cooking...
And started eating whole foods as much as I could.

I still indulge in stuff from time to time: frito pie is a weakness.
But try to follow a low crap diet. Make sense?
That's why South Beach makes sense to me.
(minus the convenience foods that got added on later)

I'm trying to stay below 135 (menopause sigh).

If you can find them, try organic BLACK soybeans. They are the greatest food, and taste food too. One of the slowest carbs I've found. I think you'd definitely feel better if you ate a half a cup of them!
Keep in mind even phase 1 is not a low carb diet. Eat your carbs. They will definitely help with energy and weakness, and because they have water and minerals, may help with the cramping too.
You shouldn't feel bad on phase one.

I am doing pretty much the same concept as a blend of South Beach and Atkins, while keeping a pretty clean holistic whole food diet...somewhat of a hybrid. --Low Carb, no glutens, high protein, and my fats are generally only good ones (EVOO --only raw, Organic EV Coconut Oil --raw & for cooking).

I stay away from junk, fast food, soda, artificial sweeteners & flavors, beet sugar & refined foods, food dyes, prepackaged goods, sweets (other than dark chocolate, fresh fruits and dark chocolate roasted almonds --on occasion), chemical additives, table salt (only Himalayan & French sea salts), non-fermented soy, corn & corn derivatives, mayo & premade salad dressings.

I've made the switch gradually, yet got here. My issues were for eliminating pain, healthier lifestyle, increasing metabolism and losing unwanted fat. Getting rid of the gluten & soda helped me the most. I don't get cravings now for junk. Also once I stopped cooking in EVOO & replaced with the organic coconut oil, I noticed a big difference. --EVOO actually changes it's molecular structure when heated and turns into a toxin, like many other oils. Coconut oil doesn't and it's a healthy saturated fat. So, now I only use EVOO raw...over already steamed veggies or on salads. --Big difference!

I could use more friends here on MFP, who are similar in their goals...full south beach is cool too. =)

*maybe for the cramping, try MSM & Turmeric supplements as well. They help me greatly.

    Hi!
Have you read Dr. A's gluten solution book? It's pretty great. South Beach for folks with gluten sensitivities. He offers some great alternatives that are still low GI.

Loving all your insight, gals. Man, you know your stuff. Learning a heck of a lot. And my head is in the right place right now. Totally in a zone for SB...full out. Did it one time true blue...back in 2008...tried P1 again, here actually. Over a year ago. No success. Was going through a lot of major life changes.

Today, head is on straight...life is better...and I am ready to rock this thing. Down 3.6 pounds ...and that is with eating everything we could...no skimping. And still have to add exercise...letting these very sad, arthritic knees of mine catch up to feeling great once again with all the processed crap.

I haven't read that one yet. Thanks, I will check it out. =)

So far, I am doing really well without any gluten, breads, pasta & cake-like sweets. I've replaced most of those with quinoa, organic millet, amaranth, brown rice, chia seeds, hemp seeds, almond flour, coconut flour and stuff like that. I rarely even eat oats or barley anymore, even if they are a gluten-free variety. For the "just in case" I get a craving for pasta (it use to be a weakness), I picked up a gluten-free version made with brown rice.

I have noticed, since I made this switch away from gluten, I don't have cravings and my pain has lowered dramatically. Yet, I am enjoying everything (large and small) I learn along the way.
  • Ladies, my Gluten book by Dr. A arrives today...looking forward to it...also, this is day ten on SB Supercharged and the pain in my knees has decreased significantly. This plan is working for me Happy Happy. :drinker:
  • Worn out by the time I got home last night...happy I had prepped dinner ahead of time. Still beyond beachy...Day 11...I know OzarkNana is closing in behind me.

Truthfully, the key to this is really planning and prepping. When it is ready to go in the fridge and you are tired...it is so easy to stay on track. If it is not ready...it is so easy to screw up.

My menu is in the edit portion of my diary. I have plugged in everything cept the unlimited veggies into the food diary...my goal is to stick with the recommended portions...I figure Dr. A did all the heavy lifting for us, figuring out calories and whatever.

Last night I stopped at the store for water, milk and ground extra lean turkey breast...forgot the milk.

    Will not forget it today.

Make it a totally beachy day, mates. :drinker:

I hate when I go to the market and forget THE THING I went for.

I'm lucky, in that I didn't do anything quite like P1. His new book even says that's ok.
So my lunch prep for work is easy: leftovers, or a PBJ on sprouted grain with an apple.
    :-)
  • My book did arrive yesterday...and it is in the house...I was just too pooped to read it.

I think I am gluten sensitive so I am looking forward to seeing what he has to say.

Tomorrow I get back in the pool. I have everything located...lol...finally...waterproof ipod, waterproof head set...big ol hat to cover my sweet little face and a noodle...to paddle my way around.

I live in the desert..gotta get out there early. LIke 6 am early. LOL

But it's time to start exercising ... you gals are my inspiration!

Had to laugh at this...CRAP food...for some reason, I thought the C-R-A-P stood for something other than crap. LOL

Thanks so much for the 411. And by the way, I have finally learned my lesson regarding the convenience foods. I tried it...(was going through lots of CRAP ... moved to another state, left all my friends behind, and a job that I loved...took a toll on me more than I cared to admit. So looked for something other than SB ... to change things up. Went the route of the open the box, eat the food, lose the weight. Not for me. For lots of people, yes. And made some very good friends there. But not for me. (Actually, I tried it twice...always yearning for that candy bar fix I think. This time, I will make good use of all the SB cookbooks I have...and stick with what I know works for me.)

I am a SBr at heart...I just wandered off track...happy to have found my way back. Mind is so much clearer now...energy is up...and able to deal with all the huge life changes so much better.

Well, it's working for me. Finally something that is getting the weight off. I love seeing the results that's for sure. I do get a bit cranky when I follow a plan, exercise 5-6 days a week and see NO progress.......I am so encouraged thus far....I know I will get to a point where things will slow down weight wise but I will at least be in a place where I've seen some success.

I'm smack dab in the middle of "the change" and have been trying to lose 5 vanity pounds for 2 years lol. But, I haven't gained any more!
