Please help this noobie. How do I use MFP with Paleo??

A noobie here. MFP seems to be all about keeping under a certain calorie count each day. I've read elsewhere on MFP that the source of the calories doesn't matter (protein, carb, fats), because a protein calorie = a carb calorie = a fat calorie. "A calorie is a calorie is a calorie."

So, this leaves me confused. If you're trying to go paleo:

1) ...is counting calories even necessary?

2) ...how do you use MFP?

Thanks!

I counted calories religiously for 4 months. This gave me the knowledge to know how much protein I am getting, and making sure my carbs are in my ballpark. I ignored calories.
Now - I track nothing. Mostly because I could easily tell you if today was a 1500 calorie day - or a 2500 calorie day - AND did I get 50 carbs or 100.
That being said, I use MFP to follow my paleo pals - and read this message board. I get something from it everyday.

If you're trying to lose weight on primal/paleo then I would say in the beginning it all counts. Like Mike said, he counted the things that mattered most to him for a few months before he got the hang of it. I still track my stuff because I'm very careful about how many carbs I eat, and pre-logging my days helps keep me on track and less likely to stray and eat a bit more than I probably should, or non paleo foods.

Do whatever feel comfortable for you. If you would like, you can take a look at my diary and see how I log my food and that will give you an idea. The database is full of so many paleo/primal foods, so you just need to take your time when you're logging.
