Both are not ideal. That being said, some Paleo people think rice is ok and that's up to them. Interestingly, brown rice has more insoluble fibre (who cares?) but it also has more phytates that iritates the digestive system and reduces mineral absorption.
Just read the link provided to Mark Sisson's site. Yup, pretty much my take on rice too. It's ok once or twice per month for my child (only rice and popcorn in our house) who loves it, but it's not ok for me. I don't like rice anyway, boring bland stuff.0 -
I's also not a big rice eater, but if I HAD TO CHOOSE, I would eat white rice first. To me the taste and texture is much better but normally rice is a no go.0

I don't understand why you keep posting in the paleo/primal group when you obviously eat a ton of grains.0 -

I eat white rice. I was unaware that this classified as a ton of grains.
I post on a paleo/primal group to give advice, and white rice is recognised by quite a few groups within the paleo community. Mark even put up an article on it, as Anjevil pointed out.
What was the point of this thread, again?0 -

I'm ok with non-paleo folks posting here. Unless we want to be as dogmatic and silly as the folks out in the normal forums, we should look at this group as a place to attract paleo folks, not necessarily as a place to deflect non-paleo individuals. Besides, I'm strictly utilitarian about things in general and what I eat is no different. If they invent a true-blue miracle food tomorrow that is synthetic as hell but deliciously provides legit health and nutrition, I'll eat it. I don't eat paleo because I "feel" like I should. I eat paleo because I'm sold on the logic and science of it. That I'll be healthier and happier because of it.
That's my long winded way of saying, if you can handle grains and it makes you happy eating them, have at it. When I eat them, I tend to end up at 325lbs. For further illustration, I feel the same way about drug use. Some people smoke a pack a day until they're 85 and die only when they trip and fall off the top of Mt Everest. Some people get lung cancer and die at 30 never having smoked a day in their life. These happenings aren't going to convince me that smoking is healthy, just like Michael Phelps eating three pizzas for lunch all the time, is going to convince me grains are going to make me an Olympic swimmer.
Wow. Well, that went on for longer than I thought it would... Kind of ranty. Apologies.0 -

Mark is not supporting rice for everyone, but it is a lesser evil (my words). Some Paleo sites consider rice Paleo, and I think for people who are healthy and not over-weight it is probably fine in limited amounts-that's why my child is allowed to have it occasionally. Additionally, for you specifically, Shadowknight, who is trying to put on weight and working out strenuously, rice is more suitable than for others, like me. Some of us more passionate Paleo people have to keep that in mind-and I'm about as opinionated as they come. Also, occasional rice consumption doesn't make one not Paleo, because ALL of us make little exceptions that work for us or just out of enjoying a food too much to give it up completely, forever. :flowerforyou:
PS. I am NOT ok with non Paleo people posting in our forum if they are here to ridicule our lifestyle, but this is not an example of that.0
