Lab results 7/15/11
total cholesterol 168
HDL 63
Triglycerides 49
LDL 95

Lab results 9/17/13
Total cholesterol 239
HDL 81
Tipriglycerides 44
LDL 149

Have only been doing paleo last 5 months so it makes it confusing as to if increase is do to diet or genetics. I am 37 year old female who came to this diet as an almost vegetarian. Lots of "healthy" carbs before. I am 12 lbs over my ideal weight. I am 4'11" and currently weigh 112. My weight has not changed (unfortunately) in the past 2 years. I am pretty active. Have a few kids, exercise a few times a week etc which also has not changed. No food allergies or sensitivities that I know of.

Do I sick with the paleo lifestyle, modify it, abandon it? So confused!

    1. Don't freak. cholesterol isn't actually proven to be related to any disease process, despite what medical science would like to have you believe.

    2. Read Cholestol Clarity by Jimmy Moore. Trust me. It has the answers you seek.

    Sorry you've had a fright!

I would think it went up because of the diet, but what does it mean to have high cholesterol? Are your numbers high according to your doctor? I see that I eat above the recommended cholesterol just from eating eggs.

Your diary is closed so I can't see what you eat. Some Paleo people still eat high carb/low fat. Which they shouldn't but whatever.

Most Paleo people that I know had improved lab work after Paleo. I didn't have the tests done, but I can observe the changes in my body. There wouldn't be a test or doctor's advice that could get me to stop my keto Paleo lifestyle. All the illnesses I have resolved?! OMG.

As mentioned, total cholesterol is not a problem, contrary to the bs we have been fed for years. You should note that the triglycerides went down. That's the one that seems to be the indicator of health problems, so GOOD news.

Oh, and you've only been Paleo for 5 months. Please check again after a year.

Your good cholesterol is optimal and your triglycerides are amazing. I say good for you!

When I used a link that ran my Ratios they all came back as good however it was so shocking to get such different numbers. My doctor who has never said too works about my diet told me to eat a "low fat diet." I set my macros per paleo guidelines and try to hit them perfectly. I do too I will stick with it longer and see what happens. If I lost some weight I think I would be more inclined to say, ya his is working!

And finally... did you know that cholesterol is not as good of a predictor of heart disease, as key cholesterol ratios? Good article on this: http://www.functionalmedicineuniversity.com/public/796.cfm

And a Cholesterol Ratio Calculator: http://www.hughchou.org/calc/chol.php (your numbers are great, by the way!)

WAIT JUST ONE SECOND. (also agree with the comments above but)...

Those number are awesome. Your trigs and HDL are the critical ones and they all got even more awesome.
The LDL did go up - but I don't see any particle size or lpa - or ldl(c).

A higher LDL is easily explainable (and even good) if they are big and fluffy. Remember LDL is not cholesterol.

I WISH I had your HDL's (our trigs are identical).

    Do read Jimmys book.

Did you also have your imflammation markers and A1C done?
hdl TRIG RATIO is a critical one. take a look at that.

    RATIOS:

Your Total Cholesterol/HDL ratio is: 2.95 - (preferably under 5.0, ideally under 3.5) IDEAL
Your HDL/LDL ratio is: 0.544 - (preferably over 0.3, ideally over 0.4) IDEAL
Your triglycerides/HDL ratio is: 0.556 - (preferably under 4, ideally under 2) IDEAL

Ideal. OMG that is insanely good. Mine was higher and my doc said he hadn't seen a ratio that good in a long time.
    I say Congrats.

Fire your doctor and get a new one. Seriously. If he's only looking at the numbers and not the ratios, then his advice based on those numbers are going to be counterproductive, at best.

And which "paleo guidelines" are you getting your numbers? Dr. Cordain's "Paleo for Athletes" will recommend vastly different macros than Mark Sisson's "Primal Blueprint", for example. Paleo's not a monolithic thing to follow blindly. It's a set of guidelines used to make informed choices.

My results were similar to this. My doctor brought up the high cholesterol, and even said if it didn't improve we may want to look at statins. Instead, I'm looking for a new doctor.

I think the medical establishment actually encourages the ignorance. Any change and clarity as to what's really important for cholesterol would result in fewer drug sales. So the drug companies continue to harp on the total cholesterol and LDL. And many doctors don't make the effort to delve any deeper.

Please note that with such low tris the calculated LDLs (I think) will be wrong. There are two calculations. With the lower tris one formula is more accurate than the other.

^^ excellent point. LDL can be "calculated" and it often wrong depending on equation and trigs as mentioned.

Unless you have a subfraction and particle size test - it can be meaningless.
