One Year "Surgiversary"

Today marks one year since my gastric bypass. It was a wild ride of denials and a roller coaster of emotions the year prior to my approval. My tv remote control and my phone couldn't take being thrown any more. I was a mess. The morning of my surgery, my sons and I set out at 2:30 am to head to Houston, where my surgery took place On the way, my sons stopped at Whataburger and I enjoyed watching them eat, knowing that I wouldn't be eating food like that for a very long time, if ever. I was prepared. I had the entire year prior to get my head in place. I had dealt with my food issues, for the most part.
My surgery went awesome--it wasn't my first--I had had 3 c sections, a hysterectomy, and my gall bladder removed. I knew what to expect. I knew exactly what I would happen after--the post surgical swallow test, the medicine cups to "eat" out of. I had my "groceries" for home in place--broth, Isopure clear (kool aid type) and .juice to dilute. I knew when to "eat" and knew when my next appt. was with my surgeon. I knew at what week I would tentatively be moving to what types of foods.
Everything moved as planned.
I started at 246 pounds at 5'5". By 8 months out, I hit 149, normal BMI.
Today I am stuck between 138-140.
I was a tight size 24, now a comfortable size 8.
I would still like to lose about 10 more pounds, optimally. We'll see. I'm in no hurry.
My surgery was well worth the wait. I have my life back. I feel like "me" again. As a type I diabetic, with so many health issues on the horizon, I was told I had "reached the point of no return."
I lost my mom at 59, and my sister, at 42, to diabetic complications.
I didn't want to go that route.
I am so thankful for the medical expertise and for the chance I was given to have this surgery. I honestly believe it saved my life.

Thanks so much for taking the time to do a year after follow up! I am scheduled for the Bypass Oct 14th. I will start my liquid diet on Monday. I am actually looking forward to it as I just got home from vacation and ate way too much. But at least it confirmed my decision that without surgery it will only get worse. I love reading the post op reports. I know it won't be easy, but just look forward to feeling better health wise.0

Thanks for posting...it is encouraging. I have just finished my check list and now I'm waiting for a surgery date. Then, I'll start the liquid diet.
I was getting a bit nervous this morning as a read through all the materials again. But after reading your testimony of a year post surgery, I'm back on point to get this done and get on with my life. I've wasted to much time being way over weight!!
