Liquid diet?

My date for sleeve surgery is next Wednesday, Oct 9th. I have read that some surgeons require patients to do a liquid diet pre-surgery and also the bowel cleansing (whatever it's called!). My surgeon doesn't require either of these things. Have any of you had a surgeon that didn't require this? Does anyone know why some would require this and some wouldn't?

From what I've seen, it varies from doctor to doctor. I've seen a lot of people who had to do a liquid diet 2 weeks prior to surgery, whereas I only had to do liquid for 24 hours before surgery. So I have no idea why some do and some don't. I did the 24 hours of liquid before and everything went fine for surgery :)

Most obese people have large livers, which are fragile and this increases the risk of surgery, even laprascopic. The purpose of the 2 week liquid diet is to reduce the size of the liver before surgery, thereby reducing the risk of complications.

The bowel cleanse is usually for RNY where small intestine is altered. Makes it easier t do RNY laparoscopically, does not matter so much when surgery is open.

I've heard the same, to shrink the liver. I just started it yesterday, my surgery is Oct 14th. Although my Dr doesn't require total liquids. He allows 1 small 2-4 oz protein meal a day with 2 protein shakes and 64 oz of water. It's been tougher than I thought. Somehow it's causing me heartburn, or what feels like it.

Wishing you the best for your upcoming surgery. I'm having the RNY (insurance reason), my husband had the sleeve and although he had a rough start. It's was open due to other medical issues. He's so glad he did and has been very successful. :)
  • Mine requires 2 weeks liquid. The second week is a special liquid that can only be purchased at the hospital. Purpose is to reduce liver and get the body ready for liquids after surgery. The special protein liquid from the hospital is said to also decrease recovery time following surgery.

Hope it works. Start liquid diet this weekend. My surgery has been scheduled 10/21.

The high protein in the liquid diet gets your body well prepared for tissue healing post surgery too.
  • I am new to this site but looking for all the advice and help I can get. I go for my sleeve surgery on October 16. My doctor put me on a low calorie diet but liquid diet is just the day before.... Didn't realize how I could want something so bad but still be so hard to do.
