Quick Introduction

This is my fourth week of logging & lurking on MFP, and I'm finally in a place to introduce myself. I was diagnosed with type II four weeks ago, after I asked for some routine bloodwork. I'd been losing weight for 6 months "too easily" and was concerned that my thyroid was off (family history), but it turns out my fasting blood sugar was almost 300. I eat well, exercise lightly (I have a 9yr old son), no family history, did not develop gestational diabetes with my pg, was carrying 20lbs extra, but now back down to a healthy weight. So more exercise, low-carb diet, metformin (so far so good) and retest blood levels in mid-November. I'm adjusting.

Thanks for being a resource for a newbie!

One question: I've been advised to limit carbs to <45g per meal (and I'm fine with this until I get the repeat bloodwork done). If carbs are supposed to be 55% of calories (According to MFP), if I eat only 15% protein and 30% fat I don't meet my 1600 calorie goal. The last few weeks I've been eating closer to 40% carb, 35% fat and 25% protein. Is this reasonable? Advice welcome.

I work with a nutritionist/diabetes educator who is part of my endocrinologist's staff. If you have that option, they could give you a more detailed, personalized plan for healthy eating. I am on metformin and Bydureon and she set a meal plan for me that would give correct results for the meds I take (the Bydureon). I eat sort of a balance of carbs, protein, and fat. My meals have 45 g carbs, between 7 and 21 g protein, and 5-10 g fat. I always include a fruit with each meal and at least one veggie with lunch and dinner - usually raw. If I have to go more than 4-5 hours between meals, I include a snack that has carb, protein, and fat, like peanut butter crackers or nuts and a piece of fruit. I don't track anymore on MFP because I was obsessing, but when I did most days I ate 1200-1400 calories.

This has worked for me. I have been able to lose 81 lbs and am 9 lbs from goal. AND my blood glucose numbers are good - morning/fasting is in the 80s and 2 hrs after eating are 90s/100s. When I started my fasting was 160s/170s.

    Good luck!

Best is to get a glucose meter and check your glucose after you eat. That way you can figure out how many carbs you can eat without spiking too high. For me it is something like net 10 g for breakfast, 15 lunch, 25 dinner.

Thank you for the feedback! I suspect meeting with a nutritionist and testing my blood sugar for response to specific foods will happen after I get my next bloodwork done in mid-November. This is all brand new for me, and I'm trying to make gradual, sustainable changes. I'll call my internist with the "how much fat is okay" question.

Thanks for sharing your stories - congrats Cathylopez197 on your success!

Just started eating Ketogenic 2 weeks ago. I have been keeping my net carbs under 20. You can see my food diary, it is open. I'm also looking for new friends traveling this same road as I am for strength and support. Feel free to add me. I reset my % on MFP according to the Ketogenic Ratios = Carb%, Protein%, Fat% = 5-25-75.

BG this am was 69. No shakiness, no side effects what-so-ever (Two weeks ago, this would have ruined my entire day).

When I changed the way I eat, which was generally 300+ carbs per day to the above ratios, I went from averaging a morning fasting BG of 109+ to the 70’s within two days. I (without my doctor’s consent or knowledge) stopped all my DM-II meds: Metformin 100mg x2/day and Glimepiride 2mg x1/day. Since that time my BG’s throughout the day have been generally stable in the 70’s. I’m waiting until December to call my doc for another A1C. 6 months ago it was above 11 !!!
