Virtual Race: Run Out Violence in memory of a fellow runner

While I was running a 5k in NY on Saturday a 43 year old women was running her 1st half marathon in Tennesee. That night she became a victim of domestic violence and lost her life. A virtual 5k has been set up where proceeds will go to her kids, a 16 yr old daughter and a 14 yr old son. RIP Melissa Griffin Bib#166. I didn't know her but the Favorite Run Community of Facebook has come together to show their support of a fellow runner.

I love the idea of this, but I'd like to know more about how everything is being handled.0

UGH! My other life (i.e. my day job) is in victim's services. I'm so, so sorry. I am running against DV on 12/8 for another agency. So ironic that it's in the same timeframe. If the logistics of how the money gets to the family are on the up and up, I'll do it too.0

The skeptic in me was curious too. I only saw that her best friend came on the thread & posted her picture from the end of the race. She is in contact with the person planning the race.
If you can't join the virtual race, next time you go for a run keep Melissa in your thoughts. Some people said they were writing her bib number #166 on their calves or tshirts in her memory. Any of those good intentions can't be wrong0 -
It's very touching. I am 41 and ran my first half marathon last Saturday as well. I don't even want to imagine what it would be coming home from an accomplishment like that to abuse. I might donate to a local battered women's center in her name.0
