Winter Season Challenge - Base Mile Builder Signup

Well - in the Northern Hemisphere, we're into the traditional Base Distance building season I guess... Rather than just doing the usual "log your km's here" - I thought I'd do something that'd be able to run "in parallel" with any monthly stuff (a little like the classics challenge did...)
So, what I propose is simple, This challenge is open for all the Northern Hemisphere members with some form of GPS logging for their rides. It's outdoors riding based only, so I apologise to the members in the extreme northerly lattitudes or the injured who spend their hours grinding away on indoor trainers... (I may have something up my sleeve for that at a future date)
Challenge is to ride outdoors for at least 50km. as often as possible. That's it.
For any ride over 50km you get 1 point.
For any ride over 100km you get 2 points
For any ride over 150km you get 3 points
For any ride over 200km you get 5 points
For any ride over 250km you get 7 points
Over 300km in a single ride, you get 10 points and we'll have a whip-round to get your head examined for you...
Ride, log on the GPS, keep your own score in the (to be opened) entries thread.
Challenge to commence 1st November 2013 and continue to the weekend before the spring classics 2014 kick off

Stick my name down, might add as a bit of extra motivation for outside riding , an indoor trainer one would be good too, however logging on that might be interesting due to the various software options etc0

I know, that's why I'm having to "give it a coat of thinking about" before coming up with something0 -
Ok I'm in!0

I would say count me in but I rarely get that many miles in on a ride during the winter months. We typically stay around 20 to 25 miles given that we are riding in the teens or colder-guess I am a wimp. Last winter I think we had one 40 mile ride. Tend to log more miles indoors. Maybe mother nature will give us a break this year.0

count me in.0

I'll count myself in - but will only be occasional rides which go over the 50km if I get out at weekends...might make me go that little bit further though if I do go out at a weekend!0
-
Sounds fun! Count me in
Thanks for organising, TBY!0 -
Yep count me in too! :happy:0

Maybe this will push me to go longer and get those 50km rides in. Let's do this.0

I kind of set the 50km threshold based on "10 minutes to warm up and 2 hours riding" tbh... Maybe it's just me being a big old Diesel engine but anything less than a couple of hours doesn't really cut it for me as base riding... If I'm being over harsh on this, and it's going to discourage people rather than encourage you, please say...At the end of the day, the only real baseline I have is a unfit, fat 50 year old bloke with a bad back and dodgy knee to compare to...0

This is another one I would like to participate in but I suspect that Karen and I share a little advantage. If I remember HK weather right it may be wet but for sure not cold. I'm in SoCal and "winter base miles" riding is very nice (compared to other parts of the USA).
That 300K looks like an inviting challenge. Just need to figure out food stops for something like that.....ummmmm.0 -
My new longer commute was set at 25 miles but I'll up it for this challenge so this is already doing me some good, I even tried out the 50km route home until I was dashed by a puncture and no tire levers on me .... nooooooooooooo, wont do that again, leaning the hard way lol0

Count both myself and my wife in (MrsCentralCaliCycling) - I think she will enjoy this.0

We are blessed with great weather for this particular challenge but I won't be turning it down for the sporting advantage0 -

50K is still usually under 2 hours for me. I will admit that bringing on a new rider may mean more 35K rides this winter but I like the challenge.0 -
me too...0

Count me in! I'll probably only be able to devote that kind of time on the weekends but it's worth a shot. I'll also be getting a lot of riding time on 15-17 Nov, but it won't be a straight 50K - I'll be working Route Safety on the bike for the San Diego 3-Day0
-
All right, i'm in....
and a couple days to get psyched up to get back on by bike............
and for those metrically challenged
50 km = 31.06 miles
100 km = 62.13 miles
150 km = 93.20 miles
200 km = 124.27 miles
250 km = 153.34 miles
300 km = 186.41 miles0 -
I'm in... Need some motivation right now!0

I'm in... Need some motivation right now!
I know I'll not be able to compete with people in sunnier climes, or more southerly latitudes* , but the 1 point 50km is just a small detour extra over my regular "full local training loop" and a 2 pointer should be just about do-able most Sundays (snow/fog/pestilence permitting)
* bearing in mind we are a little north of Edmonton, Alberta and on a level with Minsk, Belarus here... albeit with a slightly improved climate due to the Gulf Stream ;-)0 -
As matsprt said...

Might try and generate a 50km weekend route for this and use it just to keep me ticking over for the winter period.0
-
Where do I start logging my miles0
-
in the appropriate thread, which I'll create when I get my lazy *kitten* in gear :-)
edit: done - logging at http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1128987-winter-series-base-distance-challenge-logging-thread0 -
Narak_lol is killing it on this challenge. Great riding this weekend Narak_lol.0

Don't forget, there's individual challenges, including my "to be announced when I work out how to actually quantify it" Turbo challenge, but there's also a "winter omnium" - add all the points in all the disciplines together...0

Thank you very much for your kind words, Mr CentralCaliCylcing0

Karen,
I think you and I should do that 300K ride...I know you have another 90K in your legs...pick a day and let's go hit it !!
Nice work !!

Michael - thanks for the invite, and the confidence you have in me! Will try to get a couple more 200km under my belt first, I had a complete rest of 3 days before I could function properly again LOL!0

I'm seeing this one basically turning into a "Who Lives in the Best Riding Climate Challenge"...
Not going to stop me trying to get the odd point on the board inbetween recovering from frostbite, as soon as I've a roadbike I'm prepared to ride in this weather though...
maybe we should have a "temperature factor" - divide the final scores by the average temperature in ºC :laugh:0
