Fit bit?

Ok, so I have been hearing about these "fit bits" and I was wondering what do they do? And... Do I want one? Is it just a fancy pedometer? Will it track my exercise on say an elliptical or a stair climber? Any thoughts on this would be great, I like to check into things before I go buy them...

I believe I have read that it does NOT work on elliptical machines. Depending on what you really want to do, I would think a heart rate monitor might be a better choice. I have one and love it, but I have read that even that can give you false calorie readings if that is what you are looking to gain from it.

Thanks for the replies... I'm thinking I'm probably doing just fine without it :)

I have the Fitbit Zip and I love it! It really is just a nice pedometer, but I like tracking my steps. The app on my phone lets me see where I am at any time of the day, so I can push harder to make my goals. It really does make me get up and move more. I also track my weight on the app too, I like their fancy graphs :)

I am reviving this thread because I now have a fitbit and would like to see if anyone wants to play step count games with me?

On fitbit as here, I am m23prime.

I don't have a FitBit, but I do have a pedometer that works really well for being very low techy-techy. I'm willing do step challenges and the like with you. :) Just to warn though, I'm competitive, and this morning before 8 AM I got in 6,025 steps.

My abject apologies for stating the obvious. I've a bothersome inclination to try and fix/solve/answer everything.

At the same time I was completely aware that you were speaking to your 100+ friends, and look, there's Malia right on cue!

Fitbit is more of a day to day activity monitor. It syncs with MFP which is nice, but for working out I use a Polar FT7 HRM. If you're deciding between the two, get the HRM first, then add the Fitbit. I happen to love both. I really appreciate the Fitbit when I am out and about, say at an amusement park, or shopping. Also be sure to check out the Polar loop, that seems really nice, but it doesn't sync with MFP automatically, witch is the only drawback I see with it.

Don't go with Polar Loop if you work with your hands. It tracked 12000 steps when I was portioning at work. It was ok for monitoring my activity level during the day but impossible to separate what it was actually tracking. I heard there is the same problem if you work with computers.

Good to know! I had this problem with the Fitbit, the fix for the fitbit was to set it for your dominant hand, but keep it on the non-dominant hand. Because I was logging a ton of steps just from driving.

Hmmmm. People like to stand by their activity monitors.

I have no loyalty to one product over another...except that I USE a fitbit and MFP...therefore they work better than any product I do not use, whether I own one or not.

I also believe in drinking lots of water, mindful breathing, and keeping my core engaged for as much as I have the strength, patience, and memory during the day, but that is not a formal endorsement of these practices...they just make ME feel better.

Everyone will find a path to do The Thing We Are Here To Do, and the only thing those paths must have in common is a sincere desire for positive change. However you decide to brand it.

Me? I'm just happy to be adding some familiar names and like attitudes to my fitbit leader board.

Thanks for all the support and good thoughts!

Mark, I'd get a fitbit and join you in a sec... but I'm too cheap. Since I've started, I've lost/destroyed 4 omron pedometers. :blushing: The Polar Loop which I got for my birthday had serious issues. :explode: I'm using an ozeri pedometer right now which is great but kinda bulky. However it's been lasting ok. lol! I've been using them because my doctor said tracking your steps helps increase your activity level. I find that to be true.
But you're right... they are not necesaary... just another tool.
