Hyperthyroidism/Remission

Anyone hit remission from hyperthroidism (Graves' Disease) later after not hitting remission the first time around?

What I mean is: I stopped methimazole [after slowly lowering the doses] around the 20 month mark and became hyperthyroid very quickly... I'd say around the 2 week mark. My doctor said I could retry down the road in a few years, but most likely if I didn't hit remission now, I wouldn't later either.

So I wanted to know if anyone went through something similar?

What treatment did your doctor recommend for you now if he said you could try the methimazole again down the road?

I was initially hyper (Graves with Hashimotos) and was on methimazole for about 6 months and then developed an allergic reaction. I was then taken off the medication and then underwent radioactive iodine treatment. That then put me underactive. My endocrinologist always had told me that the Methimazole would only put me into remission and I would likely go hyper again, but I had decided to try it anyway.

My sister is still being treated with Methimazole. I think it has been longer than 20 months and has not been declared to be in remission yet.

Maybe someone else out there has more information for you.
  • I am back on the methimazole. What I meant was he said I could try going off it down the road again to see if I hit remission. He made it sound like it wasn't very likely.

I've had a few issues with methimazole, but nothing major, so I am sticking to it because I don't want to go down the radioactive iodine path. I've done a lot of reading and research and just don't feel comfortable doing that.
