Hey I ate all the foodz over Christmas and I'm now having to cut quite dramatically for the comp at the end of the month, about 5kgs in total so no fun nights out for me until Feb0

I've managed to get rid of the 1-2 lbs I put on over the holidays and even better, the bloat is gone and I can feel the bottom.of my ribs again!
Stef, where down south are you going? I leave on a 4 day cruise on Thursday and there will be no bikinis for me! I will be eating all foods and drinking all the tequilas, though!
We are headed to Punta Cana for Valentines day (Feb 15 actually) for 8 days...sort of a delayed honeymoon since we didn't have one when we got married. Looking forward to the sun sand and surf and buffet...hehe
The bikini's well I wore them this summer at my sisters pool and feel comfortable in them as long as Im not "running"... but I am not nearly as self conscious as I was when I was younger and smaller but softer (go figure).
Again I will be eating all the foodz and drinking all the booze as it's an all inclusive but at the same time there is a gym at the resort and we are going on a few excursions and my husband is young and active so he wont let me sit too long...:drinker:
*yes I am that woman...the one who married a man 10 years younger...:drinker:0 -

Mine is 5 years younger... Woot cougars  :bigsmile:0 -
Mine is barely 2 years younger, which is just enough for him to remind me I'm older, without him getting in TOO much trouble.
I do have a new, much younger, lifting "friend" at the gym. I was working on my 60lb bench and he came and asked how long til I was finished. When I finished up, I found him, then watched him bench around 300 lbs, complete with the faces required to do so. I told him I felt like that's how I looked trying to lift 60lbs! Imagine my surprise when this very young, very buff kid started talking to me about how I should be proud of myself for wanting to be stronger and encouraged me to keep at it. He used big words and everything! Definitely not what I was expecting. Since then, I've seen him a couple of times and he always acknowledges me and laughed politely when I offered him the use of my 5lb weight, right before he squatted over 300 lbs (with very good form). Last night, he stopped and chatted with me and gave me some encouragement and asked what made me interested in lifting. I found out he's 21 and has been lifting since he was 12 and really loves it. Two months ago, I would have never imagined me having a conversation like that with a buff dude in the man cave!0 -
Hmm, my man is 20 years older lol!
Your new friend sounds great. I love watching men lift :blushing:0 -
Speaking of my cruise, I know we'll workout a couple of times, so I need some suggestions for lifts I can do. The ship won't have Oly, or even standard bars, but they do have a good selection of dumbbells and machines. I'm thinking I should replicate the 5x5 workouts as much as possible, but this might be a good time to try some assistance stuff, too.
So, besides goblet squats, dumbbell OHP, dumbbell DL and rows, got any suggestions?0 -

I was just on a cruise after Christmas and that ship had a smith machine (*boo*hiss*) and a cable machine. So I did some things on there. I also did what you suggested above, squats and DLs with dumbells.0 -
So as I said at the start of the new year I was going to add in HIIT Training...and I did

Kicked my *kitten* holy crap. 21mins and I am breathless, sweaty but feel great.0 -
Right. I think I have a plan. Continue to run my (fearful, lacking power cleans) version of Starting Strength while I cut, but add in a bit of conditioning (prowler, KB swings) and maybe play around with pullups/chinups.
Then (and I can't see me sustaining a cut for very long!) I think Texas Method is calling.. it's a logical progression from SS, and the weight increases more frequently than 5/3/1.
Let's see how I feel about this when I actually look over the precipice!0 -
That sounds like a plan, Lydia!
My hubby told me yesterday, he ordered me a set of fractionals as a late birthday present! :happy:0 -

Walking or reverse lunges as well
Also box jumps and good old fashion jump rope0 -
I have gripey knees, hence why I stopped running.. not sure jump rope/box jumps would help?!0

Just FYI Lyd, Practical Programming is difficult to get through. I read it but ended up going off of the T-Nation article that Tameko posted in one of the stickies. That being said, I'm not finding that I'm enjoying the Texas Method very much. I'm not excited to go lift like I was with SL. I don't know if I just need a complete break or a change of program or what. I threw out my back doing deadlifts on Christmas eve and haven't lifted since. I'm at the point where I feel like I should go, not because I want to.0

He's a keeper! Mine are permanently in my gym bag (except when I take them out to use them and also I sometimes kiss them for being so good to me).0 -

Hopefully, mine will be good to me! Hubby told me "you don't see many people walking into the gym with their own weights:"0 -
Just checking in from the casino bar on Carnival Triumph. I don't want to mess up my streak!
We've already checked out the gym and they actually have barbells. Fixed weight, but better than nothing!0 -
Ooh enjoy the cruise!
Cc I haven't committed to anything yet, still fearful of change! Calculating the percentages scares me too..0 -

Do you cruise on Carnival often? I've done a Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, but not a Carnival yet.
I got the go-ahead from the Dr. yesterday to resume working out so I will start a co-ed boxing class on Monday! I still plan on lifting Tu/Thu, but maybe modifying it a little to hit the upper body work each day. I don't know if I will do a SL style or mix up some barbell work with other stuff. It will be nice to get back at it. The last few months I haven't been good to myself and I know get to "start again" with the goal of being back to where I was this time last year.0 -
Did another HIIT video last night off of fitnessblender.com...funny how I have DOMS from that but not lifting...:sad:0

Most likely due to doing higher reps. I never get DOMS from doing reps below 5-6, really. Sometimes I wonder if I've even worked out when I leave the gym (even though I'm obviously failing reps towards the end, y'know). Throw me a hypertrophy workout though (reps 8-15) and I'll feel it the next day. So doing bodyweight anything tends to be high reps. Yep
Maybe I'll check out some of those fitnessblender workouts just to shake it up. Any suggestion of a 30-45 minutes long one that would be good on cardio? ^^
Man am I having a hard time getting adjusted to going to bed at 9:30 and waking up at 5 again. Weekend sleeping-in will be bliss (and hopefully the resolutioners are not too keen on working out on a sunday morning lol. This AM the gym was like a ghost town. It was kinda nice :P)0 -
I haven't lifted in a week, because of lots of roller derby stuff last weekend, and then I tweaked my ankle which then crawled up my calf and resulted in a nagging soreness in my left leg. I actually swapped cars with someone so I didn't have to drive my manual transmission. My left leg was that sore. As a result, I haven't been lifting weights, as I can't imagine squatting will feel good.
How much less than normal should I start back with when I go back? How much strength does one lose after a week or two off? Unfortunately, I am traveling for work next week and won't have access to an Olympic bar, but there are usually dumbbells in most hotel workout rooms. I really need to get my lifting mojo back.0 -
Thursday I had an appt with a Physical Therapist. She wants me to rest my wrist for another 4 weeks before I even think of lifting. I have some small exercises to do, ad compression sleeve to wear to keep the swelling down, and I have to ice, and heat the area twice a day...oh and massage it twice a day. She did say "I don't want you lifting ANYTHING with that arm yet..." and all I heard was "you'll be able to lift again in a couple weeks." I have gained almost 10 pounds since I stopped lifting and I'm stress eating because--face it--lifting lets you feel like you are hurting someone without actually doing it. So I am a bit more stressed than usual. My plan is to walk as much as possible, and get in the pool (once I get my thigh brows waxed off)...0
-
AABru hope your wrist feels better soon! I like your analogy of hurting something without actually doing it hahah
I've come to the realization that I should probably start completely over with just the bar for everything. I was kind of getting stalled before my break and this will let me readjust and focus of form. I'm not happy about it but my boyfriend convinced me its probably for the best after I hurt my back lifting the other day. (at least that's fine now!)0 -
AABru--bummer about your wrist. Hope you get back at it soon!
hwillmott: I deloaded on my squats to work on form, and while it was frustrating I am glad that I did it!
Note to self: never go to lift at 11 a.m. at your company's fitness center/gym. Holy pre-workout--it was like Bro Day up in there. Talk about chest day en masse. BUT, I was so distracted that I forgot that the oly bar there was 10 lbs higher than the one at home. I loaded my usual weight (working on form). Ta-da! New 10 lbs heavier working weights.0 -

Yay! Nsv :-) amazing how our perception can limit us.0 -

Thanks, Lydia! It helped that some of the bros were doing push-ups right behind the rack. I didn't want my butt in their face for too long, so I was motivated to finish.:blushing:0 -

We've done all but one of our cruises on Carnival. We live outside of Houston and Carnival has 2 ships year round in Galveston, so it's very convenient!
We had a blast, cruised with friends from work, are plenty of good and drank plenty of alcohol. Also did tons of walking and worked out twice. I haven't stepped on the scale yet, but I don't think it'll be too bad. Back to work today, back to the gym tomorrow! My fractional weights came, so I'll have them, if I need them.0 -
I have an exceptionally nice squat bun today (hair up in a bun so that it doesn't go under the bar when it's on my back). I would take a pic, but my son says that "I take too many selfies for someone who's a mom."
The only thing worse than getting your hair caught under the bar squatting is getting it caught up in the shot-put you are throwing! Or if you are exceptionally blessed getting it caught in the car window while you are driving (yes, I really am this clumsy). :blushing:0 -
Thanks for the happy thoughts for healing ladies...I'm back to lurking and living vicariously through your lifting!0
