BMI added to the mix

I just can't leave well enough alone. So, as I look at the first week's results and everyone's goals it is obvious that not all goals are created equal. To give a bit more context to each person's weight loss goal I've added columns for starting BMI, goal weight BMI, and BMI change. I think this helps show the relative difficulty of each participants goal and is instructive as to how weight loss goes relative to where you are on the scale. In theory, the lower your BMI the harder your weight loss becomes, right?
Anyway, fill it in if you choose to, it's just for fun (and optional). Remember, you can calculate your BMI at various weights using the BMI button under the APPS menu of MFP.
If there are any statistical wizards out there that want to start coming up with fancy indexes and variance analysis--go for it! Nerds Unite!

I took the liberty of adding a tab to the spreadsheet that allows you to calculate your BMI based on height and weight.
We can technically add a column for height and automatically calculate all the BMI columns. If you agree, add the column and I'll work out the formulas.
Please remove if you disagree.0 -

A brilliant addition to an already brilliant spreadsheet!0 -

Agree. I think the current set up is working as is--I see data flowing in!
Let me add, I colored my BMI's yellow and green per the MFP BMI Chart, yellow being "overweight", green being "normal". I wasn't sure if there is a male/female standard for the colors (anyone?). I'm big on color coding data like this from work so it felt natural to add it.
We all are on our own journey to a healthy, "normal" weight. This challenge is just a fun way to help motivate folks because as we all know-- "It's not easy being green."0 -
My BMI is now added to the spreadsheet.0

I didn't see the tab so I used another calculator (duh!). I used red to color code obese (starting weight). However, the good news is I think I am already into the "overweight" category. After years of being obese I am pretty excited about just being overweight :drinker:
Well onward and downward!0 -
BMI calculator says I am obese :frown:
But ... BMI calculator says I can fix that in 4 pounds time.
Kawaookie ... I can relate to what you are saying ... that is a powerful short-term motivator!0 -
This peaked my interest. Even at my goal for this challenge, I'll still be morbidly obese, BUT I'll be on my way. I figured out what I'd need to lose to be at each category for the BMI scale. Here it is.
Start weight - 310 - BMI 51.6 (I know. Yikes!)
Last weight - 308.6 - BMI 51.3
OBESE - 240 lb, 39.9 BMI
SLIGHTLY OVERWEIGHT - 180, 30 BMI
HEALTHY - 150 lb, 25 BMI (which is actually my ultimate goal weight anyway)0 -
@cbumbalough -- I totally get how discouraging it is to look at BMI when you are starting out. The weight that started my journey to health: 262 at the doctor's office which was 37.1 BMI. (ouch!) Finally joined MFP in August and I am now down to 29.6 BMI in four months a few weeks. I did nothing other than stay within guidelines for 2lbs a week and increase my activity level. (In the beginning that was just walking more -- now I work out 30 minutes or more most days.)
I am all for varying colors of pink for those of us in the red zone. Because there should be something visual to show such progress!0 -
I had heard great things about the fitbit Aria scale. My husband and I were out just doing a bit of shopping, when the idea to look in **** Smith's and see if they had any smart scales popped into my brain. As I entered I looked around and didn't see any so thought I would ask. The sales clerk was a cute thin girl so it was extra embarrassing to ask. 3 minutes later with a smile and a spring in my step I made my way back to the carpark with my treasure.
Now I feel quite obsessed with the little geeky device. It has really been motivating; keeping me on my eating and exercising plan.
Does anyone else have any high tech gadgets or software they are using?0 -

Yes! I use Runtastic. https://www.runtastic.com/
There is a free app associated with the website, it uses the GPS function on your smart phone to track your walking, running, hiking, what have you. It calculates your speed and maps your route, after your exercise it will generate a complete report including your calorie burn--here's the best part--it then syncs with MyFitnessPal and logs your workout and calories automatically into your diary. For runners it is great since it does automatic pace tracking on mile splits and gives you speed and average pace as well. The only down side is running with a smart phone in your pocket--a minor nuisance.0 -

You asked for it and you got it. See the new color gradation for BMI's on the spreadsheet, they are April Fool Challenge (AFC) specific.0 -
mulecanter, I love it--thank you!
Thank you, too, shmulyeng!0 -
I weigh myself every Sunday (new week, new start)
And today, I am officially (in my eyes at least) .... not obese (add big firework display gif here)
Mulecanter, will we get a chance to re-enter our BMI for February, so I can change the colour of my bmi number?0
