Special events-birthdays and holidays

How does everyone deal with these special events while on atkins? Do you stick to your normal regimen, cheat for a day and deal with the stall, or exercise more to make up for it?

Knowing how cheating makes you fall out of ketosis and you have to take 2-3 days to get back into it, is a real motivation to me. If I feel like I need to eat more because of an event, I just make sure I eat more of good options. Lots of meat and veggies, especially when it is an evening of snacking....if I give myself some low carb options, it keeps me more on track.

A number of years ago when I was doing low carb very seriously, I managed to not cheat for 2 years!!! It astounded even myself. It was only possible because I chose to "overeat" on lowcarb foods if I ever needed something more. I think low carb menu items make this kind of thing easier for us than the low fat/low cal crowd.

I believe that there will always be something to celebrate, with food....but that is part of my bad eating habits. I am attempting to take food out of the centre of everything we celebrate. It can be part of the celebration, but it does not have to be my focus.

    Good luck!

You need to make a decision, are you okay with causing a stall for a period of time while not in ketosis and having to get back in? This may add 1 week to 1 month stall. If you are ok with that, then go ahead and splurge. I went to Europe on vacation a couple of months ago, and ate whatever. I not only knocked myself out of ketosis, but gained weight, like 10 lbs. when I got back, I got straight into keto eating again, my ketosis came back in approx 2 days, and I lost the gained weight in one week. I could have stuck to my keto eating on holidays, but I made the choice not to. You can go either way, just accept the consequences.

Thank you for bringing that up...It really does mess things up to go off of your regimen and then you have take the time to restart.I think it's best to stay with it even though it's hard.I am still learning how to do this and I needed that reminder that it takes a few days for the body to readjust to the low carb again.I will try to keep that in mind the next time that pizza starts calling out to me LOL
  • thanks guys! I really think sticking with it and being creative with low carb recipes are the way to go :).

My birthday is two days away and I'm not going to stress over the diet at all. It's worth it for me to be stalled for a few days. There's no reason for me to make myself unhappy over this. It's a lifestyle change more than a diet. I'm not going from fat & happy to skinny & miserable. I'm going from fat & happy to healthy & happy.

To help compensate for the extra calories I'm expecting to take in, I am adding an additional day of exercising, and increasing weights. My goal for this next weigh in (Mondays) is to be no heavier than I am now. I won't expect to lose any weight this week.

And yes, it IS worth it. :)

Not really much to add beyond what others have said. Its a personal decision. I have to make a conscious decision to have a cheat day/meal, otherwise it turns into 2 days, a week, a month and it doesn't stop. My birthday I planned ahead to cheat that day.

I love the positive attitude! I completely agree w/you that you gotta do what makes you happy. You will still get to your goals one way or the other.
