Hello All,
Am super new to Triathlons and will not start training for a few weeks yet but I have got my programme already. The swims are divided into short (speed) and long (endurance) swims but in the programme notes it says:
• Speed workouts - Do these workouts on the 'short swims.' These workouts should include shorter swims with recovery in between but focusing on swimming fast (ex. 5 x 100s, then 10 x 50s)
• Endurance - swim a straight 500, mixing whatever strokes in with your freestyle to finish, get your time, this will be your base for long workouts, as you build endurance this time should decrease (ex. 3 x 500 matching your base time each swim) Strength - these workouts include 'medium' distance swims (ex.4 x 200s with little recovery time in between), also mix in some other strokes and kicking. Try to include some stroke drill work in every workout.
What I dont get get is what 5x 100's, 4x 200's mean? I've looked all over the site and I have come up with nada.
Please help me: )

5 x 100 is swimming 100 yards 5 times, usually rest can be 10 - 15 seconds between each set of 100.0

This ^^^. In gym terms it would be 5 sets of 100 meters or yards depending on your pool. 10-15 seconds is pretty standard on the rest between sets. This can be manipulated depending on your swim fitness levels.
I would really encourage working in form workouts if you are new to swimming, and by new I mean didn't swim competitively as a youth. Swimming more than any other discipline is form driven. You can be vastly out of shape but if your balance and pull technique are in top shape you will fly through the water. On the other hand you can have cardio endurance for days and if your form is horrible it will always be a struggle.0 -
