Thinking about a Paleo Challenge

Hello all!
In what I would imagine is a common theme around here, I am considering my participation in a Paleo challenge at my CrossFit gym which is due to start Fed 1st. I already eat relatively clean though I anticipate some difficulties. I generally don't eat much red meat, I think bacon is very overrated, and I love oatmeal for breakfast. I also have quite the sweet tooth though my usual sweetener of choice is local honey from the farmer's market.
I love to cook for myself and already follow several Paleo recipe blogs but I would appreciate any other friendly tips on how to get started, what staples I should have around the house, best ways to leverage MFP, etc.
Thanks in advance!

Well, I'm Primal, so forgive me if I suggest something that doesn't work for Paleo. The biggest thing to me about being Primal, is that I try to stay away from processed foods. I eat a lot of nuts and seeds.
I've learned that the butcher is my friend. He'll take fresh chicken breasts and make them into ground chicken, or lean beef and grind that for me. Fish is a great food. Eggs are my friend and I usually eat 3 eggs for breakfast.
I boil (no oil needed) my protein with whatever veggies I have on hand, add a ton of spices, and that's all. Every.day. Eggs and veggies. Meat (beef or chicken) and veggies. Fish and veggies.
On warm days, I may boil the protein and throw it on top of a salad instead of cooked veggies.
So you see, it can be very simple. Protein and veggies and nuts/seeds. No major cooking and certainly no baking necessary, and it's cheap. Once you start looking for the fancy gluten free packaged stuff, it's not paleo/primal any more, it's just gluten free.
And if you add dairy then it's Primal not Paleo, but still awesome!0 -
Hello. I've been ketogenic Primal/Paleo for over a year and a half. I don't belong to any gyms or challenges and MFP is my only support since I live in an isolated location.
I have a different approach than the person above. For me, my best health relies on lots of fat, especially natural saturated fats. However, I have a very disordered metabolism that will take years to heal and had pre-diabetes, morbid obesity, severe depression, binge eating disorder and many other issues that are well treated with a high fat diet.
I base my diet on fat (animals, coconuts primarily), meat and vegetables. I eat nuts, seeds, nightshades (tomatoes, peppers etc), dairy and fruit in careful moderation.
I agree that this lifestyle is not "hard" and can actually be less expensive than one based on SAD. I do spend a lot of money on specialty high quality items but because I eat so much less I have been saving 10-20% on my grocery bill compared to before. I've been keeping track of my spending for years so the proof is there in black and white. The savings to my health are priceless.0 -

I'm doing a Paleo challenge with my crossfit gym and while I'm not following exactly what they are doing (Whole 30) it is motivational to be part of a group, we get emails that are very useful, and the before pictures and measurements gives me a goal- I want to see a difference. For me it's worth it and I got to know some more people at the box. It sounds like you are pretty close to eating paleo anyway so you might want to try it.0
