chain guards...?

I'm new to biking, so I expect this to sound totally retarded.
but, here goes...
I recently bought an older, rebuilt Giant Innova. It's a great bike, very smooth, but like most of the road bikes / hybrids I've seen, it does not have a chain guard. My question is, how do you keep your pants leg from getting caught in the chain?
Like I said, I'm new to biking and not ready to don those tight biking shorts/pants. Anyone got a suggestion here?

Hi ijohn, and welcome to the forum! I'm fairly new here, as well.
Most bikes with derailleur do not have chain guards. Some have an outer ring on the front gear cluster that helps prevent a cuff from getting into the chain. Some folks like the traditional route of knee socks and plus fours (knickers.)
You can purchase stamped stainless cuff guards to hold your pants snug, or Velcro straps made from reflective material. But what I've found works best for me, and is free as we'll, are the large rubber bands that come around bunches of celery or asparagus. Simple and effective, and no worries if you lose one.

or you wear shorts or tight long pants0

Apart from cycling for hobby/sport I also commute to my local station by bike....
I use a hi-vis slap band to stop my trouser legs cleaning the chain for me. Quite a good place for reflective / hi-vis material as the height means it gets picked up by car headlights and the movement helps you get noticed (I hope!!!).
Here's an example:

Cycle clips are the old fashioned solution:

These use Velcro I believe:

Personally I either wear short or tights when riding but if I were to ride in long pants my vote would be for the reflective straps (you can never be too visible when riding)0
